FC Barcelona head into the final matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase with their Round of 16 spot already secured. Sitting second in the standings with 18 points, they trail Liverpool, who have a perfect 21-point record.

Their last opponent, Atalanta, currently hold seventh place with 14 points and also need a win to guarantee direct qualification. Although Barcelona's progression is certain, finishing as the top seed remains a possibility. However, their fate is not entirely in their hands.

How Can Barcelona Finish First?

For Hansi Flick's side to leapfrog Liverpool and claim the top spot, two conditions must be met:

1. Barcelona Must Defeat Atalanta

A win at home against Atalanta is a non-negotiable requirement. If they drop points, they cannot overtake Liverpool.

2. Liverpool Must Lose to PSV

Barcelona need Liverpool to suffer their first defeat of the tournament against PSV, who currently sit in 19th place with 11 points.

If both teams finish level on 21 points, goal difference will be the deciding factor. Barcelona (+15) holds a slight edge over Liverpool (+13), which would allow them to finish top.

While this scenario is unlikely given Liverpool's dominance, there still may be a chance considering the reports that Liverpool will be fielding a team resting many of their key players.

Securing a top-eight finish guarantees a direct place in the Round of 16, but finishing first brings added benefits:

Seeding Advantage: The top-ranked teams are paired with lower-ranked teams in the knockout draw.

Avoiding Stronger Opponents: Finishing second increases the risk of facing a tougher opponent in the Round of 16.

Barcelona has shown strong form with six consecutive wins, including a thrilling 5-4 comeback against Benfica. While overtaking Liverpool is a challenging task, they will aim for a victory against Atalanta and hope for an upset in the PSV-Liverpool clash.
