FC Goa vs Chennaiyin FC, Durand Cup 2023: Gaurs march into semis after thumping Marina Machans 4-1

In an exhilarating match between Goa FC and Chennaiyin FC, the former emerged victorious with a commanding 4-1 win in the Durand Cup quarterfinals on Saturday (August 26).

With several new signings on display, including Carl Mchugh for Goa FC and Sarthak Golui for Chennaiyin FC, the match promised excitement from the start.

FC Goa vs Chennaiyin FC

Chennaiyin FC started strong, making six changes to their lineup compared to their previous group game against Delhi FC. Among those who made it into the starting eleven were Rahim Ali and Italian midfielder Christian Battocchio.

Sarthak Golui also made his debut for CFC, adding anticipation to his performance. In contrast, Goa FC made seven changes to their squad in an effort to strengthen their gameplay.

The Marina Machans quickly gained momentum when central defender Bikash Yumnam powerfully headed in a corner from Akash Sangwan early in the game. However, commentators felt that Seriton Fernandes of Goa could have shown more strength while marking Bikash during this crucial moment.

Determined not to let Chennaiyin take control of the match, Goa responded vigorously. Carlos Martinez almost equalized but hit the crossbar with a header shortly after conceding a goal. Udanta also missed an opportunity from close range as he misfired.

Goa finally found success at the half-hour mark when Noah headed back a cross from Udanta near the six-yard box. Carl Mchugh was quick to seize this chance and scored his first goal for Goa since joining them recently.

Noah had another opportunity moments later when he found himself behind a Udanta cross on the far post. However, he misdirected his header and failed to put Goa ahead.

Goa completed their comeback with an impressive goal from Spanish striker Carlos Martinez Rodriguez. After a menacing ball from Udanta was cleared by Sarthak, it fell to Sangwan nearby who failed to control it. Taking advantage of the situation, Carlos executed an audacious chip over the keeper, which is likely to be considered one of the best goals of the tournament.

Chennaiyin made changes at halftime, realizing the constant threat posed by Noah Sadoui. They replaced Sachu Siby with Ajith and Italian Battocchio with Jiteshwor Singh in midfield. Despite Chennaiyin's enterprising start in the second half, they struggled to find an equalizer.

As both teams made further substitutions throughout the match, Goa FC continued to dominate. The nail in Chennaiyin's coffin came when Carl Mchugh provided a perfect assist for Noah in added time, resulting in another goal for Goa. Moments later, Boris set up Victor Rodriguez who struck a brilliant left-footed shot into the top corner of Chennaiyin's net.

It was a disappointing evening for Chennaiyin FC as they struggled to maintain their early lead against a relentless opponent. This match served as evidence that anything can happen in football and highlighted both teams' commitment towards achieving success in ISL.
