FC Goa vs Chennaiyin FC, ISL 2024-25: Gaurs Narrow Gap to Top Spot With 2-0 Win Against Marina Machans

FC Goa vs Chennaiyin FC: FC Goa secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, boosting their position to second place in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 standings with 33 points. This result narrows the gap between the Gaurs and leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who sit at 37 points.

On the other hand, Chennaiyin FC's woes continued as they extended their winless streak to six matches, with their last victory coming on December 11 against Hyderabad FC. From the outset, FC Goa dominated the match, holding 58.6% possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Chennaiyin FC, in contrast, failed to register a single shot on target throughout the game.

The opening goal came in the 11th minute, thanks to Iker Guarrotxena's quick thinking in the box. After a corner kick, Boris Singh's cross was mishandled by Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammed Nawaz. Brison Fernandes's follow-up shot hit the post, and Guarrotxena was quick to pounce on the rebound, slotting the ball into the top center of the net.

Chennaiyin's keeper had a moment of redemption when he saved Aakash Sangwan's close-range shot in the 17th minute after a swift counterattack from FC Goa. However, Nawaz could not prevent Sangwan from scoring in the 26th minute. Guarrotxena's precise pass to Carl McHugh set up a well-executed lob over the Chennaiyin defense, with Sangwan calmly finishing at the near post to double Goa's lead.

Following the second goal, FC Goa maintained their attacking intensity. Guarrotxena nearly added a third in the 31st minute, but Nawaz made a vital save to keep Chennaiyin in the game. Despite FC Goa's dominance, Chennaiyin FC struggled to create clear chances.

In the 69th minute, Chennaiyin had their best opportunity to pull one back when Connor Shields delivered a cross to Wilmar Jordan Gil, who passed to Farukh Choudhary. With an open shot, Choudhary blasted the ball high over the goal.

As the match progressed, FC Goa continued to probe Chennaiyin's defense, with Sangwan coming close to scoring again in the 85th minute, forcing another save from Nawaz. Ultimately, FC Goa saw out the game, securing all three points in a comfortable 2-0 win.

Aakash Sangwan was instrumental in FC Goa's victory, completing 47 out of 55 passes and contributing defensively with tackles and crosses. His performance included a well-taken goal. FC Goa's next match is against Jamshedpur FC on February 2, while Chennaiyin FC will face Kerala Blasters FC on January 30.
