Rio Ferdinand acknowledged that former interim manager Ralf Rangnick was correct in his assessment of Manchester United's need for significant changes. United's recent 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United has left them in 14th place, marking their lowest league position at the year's end since 1989. This loss also marked their third consecutive home league defeat, a first since 1979, leaving them just seven points above the relegation zone.
Ruben Amorim has faced a challenging start as United's manager, with five losses in his first eight league games, the worst record for a United manager in over a century. Ferdinand reflected on Rangnick's tenure, recalling the German coach's call for major changes both on and off the field. Ferdinand agreed with Rangnick's comments from two years ago, noting their relevance today.

Ferdinand urged Amorim to maintain his tactical approach despite the team's struggles. Since Amorim took charge, only Southampton has lost more games among Premier League clubs than United. They have also conceded the joint-most goals alongside Tottenham. Ferdinand insisted that Amorim should remain steadfast in his methods to overcome the current challenges.
"Ralf Rangnick said this needs open-heart surgery, not a quick fix. He wasn't wrong! How true are those words ringing now? He was vilified and ridiculed when he said those words. He was so right. And I think Amorim would sit there behind closed doors and would be thinking the same thing," Ferdinand stated.
Amorim is encouraged to persist with his strategies despite the team's poor form heading into the new year. Ferdinand believes that reverting to previous tactics won't solve their issues since they weren't successful before either. He emphasized that if players understand and execute Amorim's system, they could improve significantly.
"You look at him, and you go, 'He still seems quite confident [in the] long-term. He's not going to change his short-term ideas'. And I totally agree," Ferdinand added. He stressed that returning to old ways wouldn't stabilize the team as it wasn't stable before either.
The scars from past performances are deep within both individual players and the team as a whole. Ferdinand believes it will take considerable time for them to recover fully. Despite initial teething problems being more severe than expected, he supports Amorim's continued efforts.
