Bruno Fernandes believes that his Manchester United teammates should trust Ruben Amorim's strategy to improve their performance this season. Amorim had a promising week, drawing with league leaders Liverpool and defeating Arsenal in the FA Cup. Despite a challenging December, where United lost six matches across all competitions, Fernandes remains optimistic about the team's direction.
In December 2024, United conceded 18 goals, matching their worst monthly record since March 1964. The pressure on Amorim increased after a 2-0 loss to Newcastle United. Only Southampton had more losses among Premier League clubs since Amorim took charge at Old Trafford. This left United just seven points above the relegation zone, marking their worst league position since 1989.

Fernandes acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining belief during tough times. "It's really easy when you don't get results, when you don't get the performance, that you start losing belief in everything you've been doing," he said. However, he praised the team's perseverance in sticking to their training and goals.
Amorim has focused on enhancing United's intensity and defensive structure. Yet, there is room for improvement in attack. Only 44.7% of their open-play shots have been taken under challenge from within two metres this season, second only to Liverpool's 43.5%. Additionally, United has taken more shots from outside the box than any other team (37%).
The Red Devils have scored just 22 Premier League goals this season. Only Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town, Everton, and Southampton have scored fewer. Fernandes has netted four goals, tied with Marcus Rashford for the team lead. He emphasised that attacking improvements must come from all areas of the pitch.
"The manager has been telling us a lot that we have to score more goals," Fernandes stated. He highlighted the potential of young players like Rasmus and Josh to contribute more offensively. The assistant manager also stressed the importance of running into the box with determination during counterattacks.
Fernandes shared an example of this mindset: "Garnacho recovers the ball... And in my mind it was just like, 'just run as quick as you can to get into the box because you know Garna is quick and is going to get there before you.'" This desire to defend must match their ambition to score goals.
The team recognises they have much room for growth given their talent pool. Fernandes concluded by expressing confidence in their ability to exceed current performance levels and demonstrate their true potential on the field.
