In a significant development for global women's football, FIFA has given the green light for the formation of a women's refugee football team representing Afghanistan.
This new initiative will allow Afghan female players, who were forced to flee their country and are now living abroad as refugees, to participate in matches sanctioned by the sport's global governing body.

The team will begin its journey under a one-year pilot project, which will serve as a test phase to evaluate the feasibility of the program over the long term. The move is seen as part of FIFA's broader efforts to support inclusivity and offer women from all backgrounds the opportunity to play the sport.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the decision as a historic step forward. "FIFA is committed to giving every girl the possibility to play football," he stated, describing the initiative as a "landmark" moment in the organization's history.
For any team to participate in official FIFA competitions, recognition by a national football federation is typically required. However, the Afghan Football Federation has not only declined to acknowledge any women's teams in recent years but also remains aligned with the broader national policy that has banned all forms of women's sports within Afghanistan.
With this new pathway, Afghan women exiled around the world due to political and social restrictions may now have the chance to represent their homeland in a meaningful way through football. The team will be composed entirely of players who hold Afghan nationality and have been granted refugee status in other countries.
Afghanistan last fielded an official women's national team in 2018, before the collapse of institutional support and the rise of the Taliban's ban on women's participation in sports.
The final endorsement of the refugee team now lies with the FIFA Council, which will assess the proposal in its entirety. If approved, this pilot initiative could pave the way for similar teams from other conflict-affected regions, setting a powerful precedent in the world of international sport.
