Primary Keywords First: FIFA Balogun Ban Suspension Overturned As Garcia Calls It An April Fools Day Moment Before Belgium Versus USA

Belgium’s preparation for the World Cup last-16 clash with the United States is dominated by debate over FIFA’s decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s one-game ban, allowing the striker to feature at Seattle Stadium in a move Rudi Garcia compares to an April Fool stunt.

Balogun’s availability gives the co-hosts a major boost before the meeting that will decide a quarter-final place, while Belgium, who beat the USA in the 2014 round of 16, must handle both the attacking threat and the controversy around the ruling.

FIFA Balogun ban overturned as Garcia calls April Fools moment

The incident at the centre of the row happened against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the first knockout round, when Balogun was shown a red card for a challenge from behind on defender Tarik Muharemovic’s leg, having already scored, making Balogun only the fourth player to both score and be dismissed in a World Cup knockout tie.

Garcia did not hide displeasure when asked about the suspension being lifted, saying, "I didn’t know that at the FIFA World Cup the fifth of July is now the first of April, and it’s April Fool’s Day," and stressing that the Royal Belgian Football Association had already laid out its stance in a formal response.

The RBFA statement described surprise at FIFA’s step and confirmed that officials were assessing every legal channel, with Garcia emphasising that, in the federation’s view, the case is not about defending one squad but about protecting football, integrity and ethics across the game, while also suggesting such a decision has never occurred in previous World Cup editions.

FIFA outlined the official position in a separate communication, stating: "In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year," before adding, "If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked, and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement."

The ruling is also welcomed in the United States, where President Donald Trump posted thanks to FIFA as his national team attempts to win a World Cup last-16 fixture for the first time since beating Mexico 2-0 in 2002, writing, "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP."

Garcia declined to be drawn into a discussion about Trump’s intervention and instead underlined that concentration must stay on the match against the United States, arguing that Belgium need higher consistency from kick-off to full-time and that performance levels across the 90 minutes must reflect the standards expected from this Belgian squad.

Recent World Cup numbers show Belgium’s strong record against Concacaf opposition, with three straight wins at the tournament over teams from that confederation, bettering the earlier run of two victories, one draw and three defeats, and including the extra-time success over the USA in the 2014 round of 16.

The Balogun case, the reaction from the RBFA, the praise from Trump and the historical edge Belgium hold over Concacaf sides all feed into a tense narrative before kick-off at Seattle Stadium, where Garcia’s side aim to impose structure and rhythm while the United States hope Balogun’s reinstatement helps deliver another step toward a deep home World Cup run.
