FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Group E Standings After Inter Milan-Monterrey Play Out 1-1 Draw

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Group E of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is delicately poised following a 1-1 draw between European giants Inter Milan and Mexican side Monterrey at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Tuesday. The result leaves both teams trailing early group leaders River Plate, who claimed a convincing 3-1 win over Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds earlier in the day.

In what was the first-ever competitive meeting between Inter and Monterrey, it was the underdogs from Mexico who struck first. Veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, still defying age at 39, powered home a header from a corner in the 25th minute, rising above Inter's backline to hand his side the lead.

Inter, UEFA Champions League finalists and favorites on the night, responded just before the break. Kristjan Asllani delivered a precise free-kick into the area, which Carlos Augusto redirected across goal for Lautaro Martínez to finish from close range in the 42nd minute.

Despite Inter enjoying more possession, Monterrey came close to stealing all three points in stoppage time. Substitute Nelson Deossa found space in the box but could only find the side netting with his shot - much to the relief of Inter's new head coach Cristian Chivu.

This tournament marks a fresh chapter for both clubs. Chivu took charge of Inter following Simone Inzaghi's departure after their humbling 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain. Monterrey, too, are under new leadership, with former Manchester City assistant Domenec Torrent appointed after a sluggish start to their domestic season.

As things stand in Group E

Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost Goals For Goals Against Goal Difference Points
1 River Plate (ARG) 1 1 0 0 3 1 +2 3
2 Monterrey (MEX) 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 1
3 Inter Milan (ITA) 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 1
4 Urawa Red Diamonds (JPN) 1 0 0 1 1 3 -2 0

Looking ahead, the group will take further shape on Saturday. Monterrey remain in Pasadena to face table-toppers River Plate, while Inter travel to Seattle to meet Urawa Reds - a must-win for both sides to stay in contention for the knockout rounds.
