FIFA Club World Cup: Al Hilal Shock Man City In 7-Goal Thriller To Qualify For Quarter-Finals

FIFA Club World Cup: In what turned out to be one of the most dramatic fixtures of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup so far, Saudi giants Al Hilal stunned European giants Manchester City with a thrilling 4-3 extra-time win in Orlando to seal their place in the quarter-finals.

Pep Guardiola's side, known for their fluid attacking football, started brightly and looked in control after a superbly constructed team move was finished off by Bernardo Silva early in the first half. But what followed was a rollercoaster of momentum swings, late drama, and a gutsy comeback from the Riyadh-based side.

Al Hilal

Jeremy Doku made his intentions clear from the outset, constantly threatening down the flank against former City full-back Joao Cancelo. Within minutes, he crafted a chance for Ruben Dias, who failed to convert. The early pressure paid off soon after, with Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders combining on the left to tee up Silva for the opener following a fortunate deflection off Ilkay Gundogan.

Despite City dominating much of the first half, a string of missed chances-most notably from Gundogan and Josko Gvardiol-kept the scoreline close. Al Hilal nearly made them pay before the interval as Marcos Leonardo and Malcolm threatened Ederson's goal without reward.

However, the complexion of the game flipped entirely moments into the second half. Malcolm danced past several defenders and found Cancelo, whose delivery was met by Leonardo to level the match. And before City could regroup, a lightning-quick counterattack saw Cancelo launch a magnificent trivela pass into Malcolm's stride. The winger made no mistake, clinically finishing past Ederson to put Al Hilal in front.

The chaos didn't stop there. Erling Haaland, largely kept quiet until then, responded swiftly by slotting home from close range after a scramble in the box to make it 2-2. The action nearly escalated again when Al Hilal had a penalty call overturned for a marginal offside.

With the score tied at full-time, extra-time beckoned, and it didn't disappoint. Kalidou Koulibaly rose highest to head home and give Al Hilal their third lead of the match. Yet, City weren't done-substitutes Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden linked up beautifully to equalise again, the latter curling home to make it 3-3.

But it was Leonardo who would have the final say. After a goalmouth scramble, the striker poked in his second of the night from close range to hand Al Hilal a famous 4-3 victory and eliminate the reigning European champions from the tournament.

The defeat marks a premature end to Manchester City's Club World Cup campaign, while Al Hilal march on to the quarter-finals, carrying with them belief, momentum, and one of the tournament's most memorable upsets.
