FIFA Ticket Sale Scandal: Why New York & New Jersey Authorities Are Investigating Ahead of World Cup? Explained
FIFA faces new pressure over World Cup ticket prices and sales. Fans say the process gives them poorer deals than planned. The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey announce a joint probe. They say they are checking possible consumer protection law breaches.
The states send subpoenas to FIFA, soccer’s global body. They seek records on “variable pricing” models used for ticket sales. Fans say those models push prices much higher for most games. Officials also question redrawn stadium maps that move buyers far from the pitch.

'Been Waiting Years' NY Attorney Letita James Highlights Frustration Of Locals
The inquiry mainly targets matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The venue hosts eight World Cup games, including the final. The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection joins the effort. Officials say they want clear, fair ticket rules for all fans.
New York Attorney General Letitia James stresses the local stakes. “New Yorkers have been waiting years for the World Cup to come to their backyard, and they deserve a fair shot at affordable tickets,” she says. She adds that buyers must receive the seats shown at purchase.
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport also criticises FIFA’s system. She says it turns buying a World Cup ticket “into a gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity, and impossibly high prices”. She calls the event an honour, but warns it must not “exploit our residents and visitors”.
FIFA World Cup 2026: Key Matches At NY & NJ
The World Cup starts on June 11, with games in Mexico City and Guadalajara. MetLife Stadium, renamed New York New Jersey Stadium (only for the duration of the FIFA World Cup 2026), stages its first match on June 13. That game features Brazil against Morocco. Some tickets for the July 19 final near USD 33,000.

Low-Cost Tickets & City Lottery Plans
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sets up a local ticket plan. He says 1,000 tickets will go to city residents by lottery. Around 150 seats per MetLife game, not the final, will be offered. The price is USD 50 each.
FIFA earlier released some low-cost options for fans. It sells USD 60 tickets for every match through national federations. Those tickets go to supporters of teams in each game. FIFA declines to comment on the ongoing probe into its ticket rules.
