Messi vs Mbappe: Updated FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot Table After Round of 32

Kylian Mbappe draws level with Messi after another prolific outing as the race for the World Cup's top scorer heads into the knockout rounds

The battle for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot is shaping up to be one of the defining storylines of the tournament, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe locked together at the summit after the conclusion of the group stage.

Golden Boot

Mbappe's recent brace for France against Sweden have seen him draw level with Messi on six goals. At the same time, Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembele and Vinicius Junior remain within striking distance as the knockout rounds begin.

With the favourites still alive in the competition, every goal from this stage onward could decide who walks away with the tournament's highest individual scoring honour.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot standings

Rank Player Country Goals Assists
1 Lionel Messi Argentina 6 0
1 Kylian Mbappé France 6 2
3 Erling Haaland Norway 5 0
4 Ousmane Dembélé France 4 2
5 Vinícius Júnior Brazil 4 1
6 Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal 2 -

Messi vs Mbappe: Familiar rivals battle again

The rivalry that defined the 2022 World Cup final has returned four years later.

Mbappe raced into an early lead after scoring six goals during France's dominant group-stage campaign, but Messi has matched the Frenchman with six strikes of his own as Argentina continue their title defence.

While both players have the same number of goals, Mbappe currently holds the edge thanks to his two assists. Under FIFA's regulations, assists serve as the first tiebreaker if players finish level on goals.

Should they also finish level on assists, the Golden Boot would be awarded to the player who reached those numbers in fewer minutes played.

Haaland still firmly in contention

Norway striker Erling Haaland sits just one goal behind the leaders with five goals and remains very much in the race.

With Norway advancing to the knockout rounds, the prolific forward will have multiple opportunities to overtake both Messi and Mbappe if his side enjoys a deep run.

Dembele, Vinicius among outside contenders

France's Ousmane Dembele has quietly emerged as a serious contender with four goals and two assists, while Brazil winger Vinicius Junior has four goals and one assist heading into the Round of 32.

Both players will hope extended knockout campaigns can bring them into Golden Boot contention.

Can Cristiano Ronaldo still challenge?

Cristiano Ronaldo remains mathematically in the race but faces a significant challenge.

Portugal's captain has scored just twice so far, with both goals coming in the 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan during the group stage.

If Portugal make a deep run, Ronaldo would likely need a string of multi-goal performances to close the gap on the tournament leaders.

World Cup Golden Boot winners in the current field

Three players at the 2026 World Cup have previously won the Golden Boot:

  • James Rodriguez (Colombia) - 2014 (6 goals)
  • Harry Kane (England) - 2018 (6 goals)*
  • Kylian Mbappe (France) - 2022 (8 goals)

No player has ever won the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice, meaning Mbappe has the chance to become the first footballer in history to achieve the feat.

Most World Cup goals in history

Messi and Mbappe are also rewriting the all-time World Cup scoring charts.

Player Goals
Lionel Messi 19
Kylian Mbappé 18
Miroslav Klose 16
Ronaldo (Brazil) 15
Gerd Müller 14

Messi currently holds the outright record with 19 World Cup goals, but Mbappe sits just one behind and could reclaim top spot before the tournament ends if France continue progressing.

With the knockout stages now underway, every goal carries extra weight. The Golden Boot race appears destined to be decided by two of football's greatest modern stars, though Haaland, Vinicius Junior and Dembele remain close enough to capitalise should either Messi or Mbappe stumble.
