FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcast Confirmed In India As Zee Secures Landmark FIFA Rights Deal

New Delhi, June 1: The wait is finally over for Indian football fans. After months of uncertainty over who would broadcast the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the country, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) on Monday (June 1) announced a landmark agreement with FIFA that will bring football's biggest tournament, along with 38 other FIFA events, to Indian audiences until 2034.

The deal includes rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup and a host of youth and futsal competitions. Matches will be broadcast on Zee's newly launched Unite8 Sports channels and streamed live on Zee5.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Rights Win for Zee in India

Industry estimates suggest the agreement is worth around $35 million, significantly lower than FIFA's initial valuation of nearly $100 million for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups combined.

For Indian football supporters, the announcement ends one of the biggest unresolved broadcast stories ahead of the expanded 48-team World Cup, with India having remained one of the final major markets where FIFA had yet to secure a media partner.

Why Did FIFA's India Rights Take So Long To Sell?

Unlike the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which enjoyed favourable viewing hours for Indian audiences, the 2026 edition presents a significant commercial challenge.

With the tournament being staged across North America, nearly 90 per cent of the 104 matches are expected to be played between midnight and 6 AM IST. Those timings have long been viewed as a major hurdle for broadcasters trying to maximise advertising revenue, especially with India not featuring in the tournament.

The difficult time slot reportedly led to prolonged negotiations between FIFA and JioStar, with both parties unable to agree on the valuation of the rights package. FIFA was understood to be seeking close to $100 million for the combined rights to the 2026 and 2030 editions, while broadcasters believed the commercial returns would not justify such a valuation.

The impasse eventually opened the door for Zee, which has been rebuilding its sports portfolio through its recently launched Unite8 Sports network.

FIFA And Zee Confirm Long-Term Partnership

In a joint statement, FIFA and Zee confirmed a long-term partnership that will see 39 FIFA events broadcast in India over the next decade.

"FIFA and 'Z' announce agreement to bring FIFA World Cup 2026 and major FIFA tournaments to audiences in India until 2034," the statement said.

The governing body added that all matches and related programming would be distributed across Zee's linear television network and digital platforms, with multilingual coverage aimed at improving accessibility and fan engagement across the country.

According to the agreement, the package extends far beyond the men's World Cup and includes some of FIFA's most important global properties across men's, women's and youth football.

Which FIFA Tournaments Will Be Broadcast In India?

Apart from the FIFA World Cups in 2026 and 2030, Zee will also broadcast:

  • FIFA Women's World Cup 2027
  • FIFA Men's U-17 World Cups (2026-2034)
  • FIFA Women's U-17 World Cups (2026-2034)
  • FIFA U-20 Men's World Cups (2027, 2029, 2031 and 2033)
  • FIFA U-20 Women's World Cups (2026, 2028, 2030, 2032 and 2034)
  • FIFA Futsal Men's World Cups (2028 and 2032)
  • FIFA Futsal Women's World Cups (2029 and 2033)
  • FIFA Intercontinental Cup (2026-2030)

The agreement also covers FIFA documentary and original content linked to these competitions.

FIFA Sees India As A Strategic Market

FIFA believes India remains one of the most important growth markets for the sport despite the national team's absence from major international tournaments.

"The Indian market is of strategic importance for FIFA as it displays immense potential driven by a young and passionate audience. We believe the extensive broadcast and digital distribution ecosystem of 'Z' coupled with their deep understanding of local viewers and multi-platform capabilities will play a pivotal role in expanding the reach of football with fans across every part of India," FIFA Chief Business Officer Romy Gai said.

The deal was announced shortly after China secured its own World Cup broadcast agreement, leaving India as one of the last major territories awaiting a resolution.

A Defining Move In Zee's Sports Revival

The acquisition represents Zee's biggest sports rights investment since its return to the sports broadcasting business.

After exiting the sector nearly a decade ago, the company has re-entered the market through Unite8 Sports and has already acquired properties such as ILT20, the Bengal Super League and the UP Kabaddi League. Adding FIFA's marquee tournaments significantly strengthens its position in India's increasingly competitive sports broadcasting landscape.

"We are excited to bring one of the world's biggest sporting spectacles to Indian audiences. Football cuts across regions and demographics, and the investments in garnering the media rights and launching dedicated sports channels reflect our clear belief in its long-term potential," ZEEL CEO Punit Goenka said.

"Our partnership with FIFA will enable us to unlock the true value of the sport in line with our sharp focus on growth and profitability, while amplifying the excitement of the game for every fan."

For Indian football fans, however, the biggest takeaway is simple. The 2026 FIFA World Cup finally has a home in India. With the largest World Cup in history fast approaching, supporters can now look forward to following every moment of the action live on television and digital platforms without any lingering uncertainty.
