FIFA World Cup 2026 Shock: Ivory Coast's Elye Wahi Arrested in Major Match-Fixing Scandal

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been rocked by a major controversy off the pitch. Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi was arrested on suspicion of match-fixing offences less than two weeks before the tournament kicked off.

Despite the active investigation and dramatic arrest by French police, the 23-year-old striker travelled to North America and continues to feature for his national team. Here is everything we know about the allegations, the suspicious betting patterns, and what this means for Wahi's World Cup campaign.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Shock Ivory Coast s Elye Wahi Arrested in Major Match-Fixing Scandal

The Allegations: Suspicious Betting and a Timely Yellow Card

The controversy centres around Wahi's time playing for French club Nice. An active investigation is currently seeking to establish whether the forward deliberately earned a yellow card during a Ligue 1 match against Metz on May 17.

The probe was initiated after the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) received multiple notifications regarding highly suspicious betting patterns. These wagers were specifically placed on Wahi receiving a yellow card during the match.

During that specific game, Wahi committed a foul on full-back Bouna Sarr, which went unpunished, before receiving a booking in the 35th minute for a late tackle on Metz defender Sadibou Sane.

Because of this yellow card, his fifth of the Ligue 1 season, Wahi was suspended for the crucial first leg of Nice's relegation play-off against Saint-Etienne on May 26, a match that ended in a 0-0 draw.

A Dramatic Arrest After Heroics on the Pitch

Wahi returned from his suspension for the second leg of the relegation play-off on May 29. He put on a spectacular performance, scoring two goals and earning the Man of the Match award in a 4-1 victory that successfully kept Nice in France's top flight.

However, the celebrations were remarkably short-lived. Immediately following his heroic performance, Wahi was arrested by anti-corruption specialists from the French police.
A spokesperson for the Marseille public prosecutor's office confirmed the arrest on May 29, stating it was part of an investigation into "organised fraud, organised sports corruption, handling of proceeds of crime and money laundering".

Wahi was interviewed in police custody and subsequently released, though the investigations remain ongoing. He has not yet been charged with any crime.

World Cup 2026: Playing Under a Cloud of Controversy

Despite the severity of the allegations and his recent arrest, Wahi was permitted to travel to the United States to represent the Ivory Coast.

He started in his nation's opening 1-0 victory over Ecuador on Sunday in Philadelphia. The striker played for 55 minutes, linking up with Man of the Match Yan Diomande and hitting the crossbar just two minutes before being substituted for Inter Milan's Ange Yoan-Bonny. Manchester United's Amad Diallo eventually secured the win with a 90th-minute goal.

A major question mark now hangs over Wahi's immediate future in the tournament. The Ivory Coast is scheduled to travel to Toronto, Canada, to face Group E leaders Germany on Saturday. It remains to be seen whether his ongoing legal situation will affect his ability to enter Canada, especially given that Canadian authorities recently denied entry to Ghana's Thomas Partey due to off-field legal charges in the UK.

Who is Elye Wahi?

Born on the outskirts of Paris in 2003, Wahi has had a nomadic young career. After spending time at the Caen academy, he broke into Ligue 1 with Montpellier in the 2020-21 season. He went on to play for Lens and Marseille before moving to the Bundesliga to join Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of last season.

After struggling to find the net in Germany, he returned to France on loan with Nice in January, where he managed five goals in 14 league appearances to help the club avoid relegation. Internationally, Wahi represented France at the youth level before officially switching his allegiance to the Ivory Coast in March of this year.
