FIFA World Cup 2026: Switzerland join Elite World Champions as only 2nd European Nation to Prestigious Record

Switzerland secured top spot in Group B and a place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada at BC Place on Wednesday.

The match stayed level at 0-0 through a cautious first half. Canada, needing at least a draw to finish first, applied pressure but created few clear chances against a compact Swiss defence. Switzerland looked threatening on the break but lacked a decisive finish before the interval.

The second half began explosively. Rubén Vargas gave Switzerland the lead just 46 seconds after the restart with a sharp strike. Johan Manzambi doubled the advantage in the 57th minute after a swift counter. Canada responded through Promise David in the 76th minute, but Switzerland defended resolutely to claim the points and leapfrog their opponents.

This result confirmed Switzerland's progression with seven points from three group matches. They finished ahead of Canada on four points.

The victory also delivered a notable milestone. Switzerland have now reached the knockout stages in each of the last four FIFA World Cups - 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026. France is the only other European nation to match this consistent record across the same four tournaments.

The Swiss side has demonstrated remarkable reliability in recent World Cups, advancing from the group stage every time despite facing competitive opposition. Their disciplined approach and timely scoring have become hallmarks of their campaigns.

Switzerland will now prepare for the round of 32, carrying forward their strong form into the knockout phase as they are to play against the third-placed team of either Group E,F,G,I or J.
