After Mexico opened the competition with a 2-0 win over South Africa and South Korea came from behind to defeat Czech Republic 2-1, attention now shifts to Canada and the United States as they begin their respective campaigns in front of home fans.

Canada Looking for Historic First World Cup Win

Canada enters the tournament carrying the expectations of a nation eager to see its footballing rise continue on the biggest stage.

The Canadians are still searching for their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory after losing all three matches in both their previous appearances in 1986 and 2022. However, much has changed since then. Canada has transformed into one of CONCACAF's strongest sides and enters the tournament ranked significantly higher than in previous World Cup cycles.

Friday's clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina will mark the first-ever meeting between the two nations.

Statistical models heavily favour the hosts. According to Opta's pre-match simulations, Canada wins nearly 58 percent of the time, while Bosnia and Herzegovina are given roughly a 20 percent chance of victory.

With home support expected to create a vibrant atmosphere at BMO Field, Canada will be aiming to make history by securing its first World Cup win.

USA Face Familiar Opponents in Paraguay

The United States will conclude Day 2 action when they take on Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in California.

The Americans and Paraguay have surprisingly little World Cup history together. Their only meeting at the tournament came in the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, when the United States claimed a 3-0 victory.

While the USA enters as slight favourites, predictions suggest a far tighter contest than Canada's match earlier in the day.

Opta simulations give the Americans a 39.8 percent chance of victory compared to Paraguay's 33.6 percent, highlighting how competitive the encounter could be.

The United States will hope home advantage and a packed SoFi Stadium can provide the edge needed to start their campaign with three crucial points in Group D.

What Happened on Day 1 FIFA World Cup?

The tournament began dramatically on Thursday.

Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match at Estadio Azteca thanks to goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez. The contest also produced three red cards, making it one of the most ill-tempered World Cup openers in recent memory.

Later in Guadalajara, South Korea fought back from a goal down to beat Czech Republic 2-1. Hwang In-beom and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu scored after Ladislav Krejci had given the Czechs the lead.

The results leave Mexico and South Korea tied at the top of Group A after the first round of matches.

The Bigger Picture

Day 2 marks an important milestone for the tournament as all three host nations begin to enter the spotlight. Mexico has already done its job by opening with a victory, and now both Canada and the United States will look to follow suit.

With 48 teams competing and only the top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-placed sides, advancing to the Round of 32, every point is crucial from the outset.

By the end of Friday, football fans will have a clearer picture of Group B and Group D, while the momentum of the biggest World Cup in history continues to build across North America.
