FIFA World Cup 2026: Which Are The Teams Likely To Replace Iran In North America? Explained

Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026 has been thrown into doubt, leaving football authorities facing the possibility of finding a replacement team. Iran had already secured qualification and was drawn alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand in the group stage.

However, escalating geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Israel have cast serious uncertainty over their participation. Reports suggest devastating airstrikes in Tehran that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, prompting Iran's sports minister to indicate that the national team may not travel for the tournament.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Which Are The Teams Likely To Replace Iran In North America Explained

Should Iran officially withdraw, FIFA will be tasked with determining a replacement, a development that has created significant uncertainty around the World Cup lineup. The situation now raises a key question: which nation could step in to fill Iran's place?

Will Iran Play In FIFA World Cup 2026?

Although there has been no official confirmation that the Iranian team has withdrawn from the football team is likely to play in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America. The issue began after Iran's sports minister, Ahmad Donyamali, made a strong statement during a television interview. He said the country cannot take part in a tournament hosted mainly in the United States after recent events.

"Considering that this corrupt regime has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup," Donyamali added.

Who Can Replace Iran in The FIFA World Cup 2026?

According to the rules of FIFA, the governing body or the federation has the final say to pick a replacement if a qualified team withdraws. The rulebook says that the spot can go to a nominated alternate, which is often the runner-up from the same qualifying path or the highest-ranked team that did not qualify for the tournament.

As Iran qualified through Asia, the replacement would most likely come from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). In this two teams are being discussed the most. The first one is the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They finished second, just behind Iran, during the qualifying, so some believe they could move into the World Cup directly.

Another option is the Iraq national football team. Iraq is currently part of the intercontinental playoff pathway, but reports indicate that FIFA could consider granting it direct entry into the tournament should Iran withdraw.

Another unlikely scenario would see FIFA proceed with a reduced group of three teams. However, this would complicate the structure of the expanded 48-team format, particularly with the inclusion of the best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage. As a result, replacing Iran with another nation appears to be the more practical outcome.

FIFA has not yet reached a final decision. The officials are waiting until the qualification playoffs conclude before determining the next course of action.
