UEFA has confirmed that the 2026 Finalissima between Argentina and Spain will not be played in Qatar on 27 March. The fixture at Lusail Stadium is cancelled because of the current conflict in the Middle East. Formula One has also called off the Bahrain Grand Prix and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in the same regional context.
The decision follows lengthy talks between UEFA and the local organisers in Qatar. UEFA stated that the political situation in the region means the Finalissima cannot be staged there as planned. Officials then assessed several alternative venues and dates, yet each proposal was rejected by the Argentinian Football Association.

The 2026 edition was planned as the fourth Finalissima, matching the European champions with South America’s title holders. It would have been the first Finalissima since 2022, when Argentina beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium. The Qatar match was also expected to feature Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal against Lionel Messi for the first time.
Spain, as UEFA EURO champions, and Argentina, as Copa America winners, were scheduled to meet at Lusail Stadium. The game was arranged for 27 March under the original agreement between UEFA, CONMEBOL and the Qatari authorities. However, once regional tensions escalated, all parties accepted that the original hosting plan could not continue.
UEFA first proposed keeping the 27 March date but moving the Finalissima to Real Madrid’s Estadio Bernabeu. The match would have used a strict 50:50 division of tickets for both fan bases. UEFA believed that the Bernabeu would offer an elite stage for such a high-profile contest, but Argentina declined this idea.
| Option | Venue | Dates | Key Conditions | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Estadio Bernabeu, Madrid | 27 March 2026 | Single match, 50:50 supporter split | Rejected by Argentina |
| 2 | Bernabeu and Buenos Aires | 27 March 2026 and pre-UEFA EURO/Copa America 2028 window | Two legs, 50:50 supporter split in Madrid | Rejected by Argentina |
| 3 | Neutral European venue | 27 or 30 March 2026 | Single match, neutral setting | Rejected by Argentina |
| 4 | Unspecified, after World Cup | Post-World Cup period | Argentina proposal; dependent on Spain’s calendar | Impossible due to Spain’s schedule |
| 5 | Unspecified | 31 March 2026 | Argentina available only that date | Unworkable within existing arrangements |
A second idea involved two legs for the Finalissima. The first would be at the Bernabeu on 27 March, with a 50:50 fan allocation. The return leg would take place in Buenos Aires during an international window before UEFA EURO 2028 and Copa America 2028. Argentina again rejected this plan.
UEFA then looked at using a different neutral venue in Europe while staying close to the original calendar. Officials suggested staging the Finalissima either on 27 March, as initially agreed, or on 30 March instead. UEFA asked Argentina for a firm commitment to either date and format, but that request was refused as well.
Argentina responded with a counterproposal to play the Finalissima after the World Cup. Spain, however, had no free dates in the calendar during that period, so the option was ruled out. Argentina later informed UEFA that the national team would only be available on 31 March, a date considered unworkable and outside the original agreement.
UEFA eventually announced the cancellation publicly through an official communication. The organisation posted a statement on social media that read: "It is with great disappointment that we confirm the cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima, due to circumstances and scheduling constraints that made the match impossible to reschedule. The cancellation of the Finalissima between Argentina and Spain removes a major fixture from the 2026 schedule. It also underlines how regional conflict and congested international calendars affect elite football events in the Middle East and beyond. Supporters of both national teams, and neutral fans, must now wait for another opportunity to see this matchup.
