First Nayanar Memorial Football Tournament begins Apr 10

Kannur, Feb 6 (UNI) Ten prominent soccer clubs, including four foreign clubs, will clash in the first Nayanar Memorial International Football Tournament, to be conducted here from April 10 to 30.

In a release here, Organising Committee Convenor M V Govindan said soccer clubs from North Korea, Qatar, Malayesia and Saudi Arabia would play in the 20-day tournament which would be inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Somanath Chatterjee.

A 150-sovereign gold cup is waiting for the winners, he said adding those who win the match for four continuous years could own the cup.

Mr Govindan said football legend Maradona was expected to reach the city as the chief guest of the tournament.

Mohammaden Sporting Club, East Bengal, Army XI, SBT, JCT Mills, Sports Club Goa, Mahindra and Viva, Keala were the other teams contesting the tournament.
