Florian Wirtz will be absent from Bayer Leverkusen's upcoming Champions League match against Bayern Munich. This follows a ligament injury that will keep him out for several weeks. The team, led by Xabi Alonso, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen on Saturday. Despite Bayern's 3-2 loss to Bochum, Leverkusen remains eight points behind the Bundesliga leaders.
The absence of Wirtz is a significant blow for Bayer Leverkusen as they prepare for crucial fixtures. The Bundesliga champions are already trailing by three goals in their all-German Champions League tie. Wirtz's injury occurred during the home game against Werder Bremen, where he was substituted at half-time due to an ankle issue.

Bayer Leverkusen confirmed in a statement that Wirtz will be sidelined for an unspecified duration. The 21-year-old midfielder sustained a ligament injury in his right ankle during the match against Werder Bremen. "The loss of Florian obviously hits us hard in this phase of the season but we will compensate for him with a strong squad," said Simon Rolfes, Bayer's sporting director.
This season, Wirtz has been instrumental for Leverkusen, scoring nine goals and providing ten assists in the Bundesliga. He has also netted six times in the Champions League. His absence will be felt not only by his club but also by Germany's national team.
Wirtz is set to miss Germany's Nations League quarter-final matches against Italy scheduled for March 20 and March 23. Additionally, he is unlikely to recover in time for the DFB-Pokal semi-final against Arminia Bielefeld on April 1.
Despite this setback, Bayer Leverkusen remains optimistic about Wirtz's recovery. "We know Florian and also know he will come back as soon as possible," Rolfes added. The club expects him to be fully fit for the final stages of the season.
