Arne Slot remains optimistic that Florian Wirtz, Liverpool's new signing, can fill the creative void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure. Wirtz debuted at Anfield on Monday, playing 74 minutes in Liverpool's 3-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao. The German international stood out with six crosses, second only to Mohamed Salah in chance creation.
During the match against Bilbao, Wirtz took three shots, a tally surpassed only by Cody Gakpo, who scored twice from four attempts. In terms of passes in the final third, only Salah (23) and Dominik Szoboszlai (20) exceeded Wirtz's 17 passes. This performance highlights his potential to contribute significantly to Liverpool's attacking play.

The 22-year-old joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June for a reported club-record fee of £116 million, which could rise to £135 million with add-ons. His arrival is part of a broader recruitment strategy that saw five other players join the Reds this summer.
Alongside Wirtz, Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi, and Freddie Woodman. However, they also experienced significant departures. Luis Diaz moved to Bayern Munich, Jarrell Quansah transferred to Leverkusen, and Caoimhin Kelleher joined Brentford. These transfers brought in a combined £118 million for the club.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was another high-profile exit as he joined Real Madrid earlier this summer. Over his career at Liverpool, he made 354 appearances and played a crucial role in their Premier League title wins and the 2019 Champions League triumph. His record of 64 assists is unmatched by any other Premier League defender.
Alexander-Arnold contributed to 82 goals in the Premier League, second only to Leighton Baines among defenders. Despite operating in different positions, Slot believes Wirtz can replicate Alexander-Arnold's impact on the team's creativity.
"I think there is always room for improvement in every department," Slot stated post-match. "We have added a few extra weapons." He praised Wirtz's creativity in attack while acknowledging Alexander-Arnold’s unique ability to deliver precise crosses from defense.
Slot emphasised that although Wirtz plays differently than Alexander-Arnold did at Liverpool, his creative flair will be vital for the team moving forward.
