Phil Foden Admits Manchester City’s Title Defence Is Over After Draw Against Brentford

Phil Foden acknowledges that Manchester City's Premier League title defence has ended following a draw with Brentford. With the team now focusing on securing a top-four finish, Foden reflects on their performance and the challenges ahead.

Phil Foden has expressed his belief that Manchester City's chances of retaining their Premier League title have vanished following their late draw against Brentford. Despite Foden's two goals giving City a 2-0 lead at the Gtech Community Stadium, late goals from Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard resulted in a draw. This season, City has lost 14 points from winning positions, marking their highest under Pep Guardiola.

The recent draw marked the first time since December 2023 that City failed to win a top-flight match after leading by two or more goals. Previously, they had won 22 consecutive such matches. Currently, Guardiola's team sits sixth in the Premier League standings, trailing leaders Liverpool by 12 points, with Liverpool having an additional game in hand.

Foden Concedes City’s Title Defence is Over

Foden candidly acknowledged the situation when speaking to Eurosport, stating, "The title? Yeah, yeah, it's done for sure, it's done." He emphasised the need for realism and highlighted that their performances haven't been sufficient to compete at the top. The focus now shifts to securing a top-four finish and performing well in other competitions like the Champions League.

City's struggles began with a 2-1 loss to Tottenham in the EFL Cup back in October. Since then, they have managed only one win in their subsequent ten matches across all competitions. Although they started the new year unbeaten in three games, their performances have not been convincing enough to re-enter the title race discussion.

Foden admitted that being out of title contention at this stage is unfamiliar territory for him. "I've not been in this situation before where I've lost this many games," he said. He sees it as a learning experience for both himself and the team on how to regain form and confidence.

Despite these challenges, Foden remains optimistic about City's potential. "I believe, I still believe in the team," he stated. He stressed the importance of returning to training with determination and maintaining belief in their abilities to overcome current obstacles.

Reflecting on past successes, Foden noted how opponents are highly motivated when facing City due to their dominance in recent seasons. He acknowledged that matching or exceeding this intensity is crucial but admitted they are currently falling short.

As Manchester City navigates through this challenging period, Foden's comments underscore a shift in focus towards achieving realistic goals for the remainder of the season while maintaining hope for future success.
