Ange Postecoglou Claims Football Management Is Tougher Than Being Prime Minister

Ange Postecoglou argues that football management is now more challenging than any other profession, including that of the Prime Minister. He highlights the increasing scrutiny and lack of respect for managers in today's society.

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, has expressed that managing a football team is currently more challenging than any other profession, even more so than being the Prime Minister. He highlighted the recent dismissals in the Premier League, noting that four managers have already lost their jobs before Christmas. Among them are Gary O'Neil and Russell Martin, who left Wolves and Southampton respectively.

Russell Martin's departure followed Southampton's 5-0 home defeat against Tottenham, just over six months after he led them back to the top division. Similarly, Steve Cooper's tenure at Leicester City lasted only five months. Erik ten Hag also ended his time with Manchester United this season. Postecoglou himself has faced criticism due to Tottenham's inconsistent start.

Postecoglou: Football Management Is Tougher

Postecoglou believes that society has lost respect for managers, with speculation about replacements occurring while they are still employed. "Is there a good way [of sacking a manager]? I really don't know," he stated. He feels that the treatment of managers has crossed a line, as people are quick to discard them without consideration.

The Australian manager further explained that there seems to be no good method for handling managerial changes. "I don't know if there's a good way or best way of handling it," he said. He mentioned leaving positions before facing dismissal himself, acknowledging the harsh reality of modern football management.

Postecoglou compared his role to that of a Prime Minister, stating that football managers face more frequent evaluations. "Yes, come on," he responded when asked if managing was harder than being Prime Minister. He pointed out that while politicians face elections every few years, managers are judged weekly based on match results.

The pressure on football managers is immense due to constant scrutiny and short tenures. Postecoglou remarked that very few leave the profession unscathed. The frequency of managerial changes highlights the demanding nature of this career path.

The discussion around managerial dismissals reflects broader societal attitudes towards employment and respect for individuals in high-pressure roles. Postecoglou's comments shed light on the personal challenges faced by those in football management today.
