Football Manager 2024: What are the lines of engagement?

Football Manager 2024 lets you pick between three options for line of engagement. It basically means how far up the pitch your attackers will be when they are not on the ball.

As Football has evolved over the years, roles of players have changed drastically. Nowadays defenders are also expected to contribute while going forward while forwards have the job of tracking back and winning the ball back.

A line of engagement basically decides how you wish to win the ball back, who wins it and where they win it. The three options are high press, mid block and low block.

A high press means players will be looking to win the ball back higher up the pitch. A low block will focus on sitting back and inviting pressure and winning the ball back whereas a mid block is the middle ground of the two.

Choosing your line of engagement carefully is very crucial and each of the options have pros and cons. A high press will mean that you will put your opponents under plenty of pressure and will be trying to force mistakes.

However, if the opponent have good technical players at the back, they can easily beat the initial press and hurt you with killer passes because you will not have enough bodies behind.

A mid block will not be as aggressive as a high press and you will have more players in the middle of the pitch. So, you can expect to win the ball in that area.

However, if an opponent has a good sweeper keeper and quality ball playing defenders, they will enjoy plenty of possession and will have more time and space to hurt you.

A low block can be effective if you are managing a lesser team. Your defence and midfield will be very compact and you can expect to win the ball back in deeper areas but technical attackers can find a way to beat a low block with their movement and vision.

Also, you might win the ball in deeper areas but you will concede possession back to the opponents because most of your players will be behind the halfway line.

So, choose your line of engagement carefully according to your team's strenghths. A high press is suggested for bigger and stronger sides.

A low block is effective when you manage a lesser team. A mid block can bring the best of both worlds and can be implemented effectively with most teams.
