London, Oct 7: The father of England striker and Manchester United, Wayne Rooney's father among nine others have been arrested by the police over the charges of betting irregularities, said police sources.

48-year-old Wayne Rooney senior was detained by the police at his home, Liverpool along with his 54 -year-old uncle Richie.

26-year-old Steve Jennings a central midfielder with Scottish Premier League was also arrested at his home in Glasgow.

The arrests come after the police's crackdown on the gambling authorities.

Police further revealed that investigation were related to a match between Hearys and Motherwell on Dec 14 2010, said police.

"While the investigation involves several other individuals (outside) Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match.

"Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course," said Stewart Regan, Chief Executive , Scottish Football Association.
