Kolkata, Sep 7: He was being hailed as the prince of Indian football in the 1980s, but he could not sustain for long. But in between 1980 and 1985 the Iranian midfielder Majid Baskar stole all the limelight with his majestic football and created a niche for himself.

The fanatic crowd used to get simply eccentric watching Majid, who donned the jerseys of Kolkata's two big clubs, as he represented East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting.

The man left Kolkata at the end of 1985, due to complete depression after he heard that most of his family members were attacked, and some even died in the war between Iran and Iraq.

In the last 32 years, Majid was almost untraceable. Despite the fact that his striking partner on the pitch as well as country mate Jamshid Nasiri settled in Kolkata, Majid could not be found.

But the great man is all set to be back in Kolkata in the first week of October.

According to reports, Majid has been invited to take part in an exhibition football match to be held between Sourav Ganguly and Diego Maradona XI. Both the legends will also participate in the exhibition match.

According to Jamshid, Majid has been working with a travel agency in the north of Iran. Now he lives in a place named Khoramshehor.

Living so many years in oblivion, the crafty midfielder never missed a chance of playing football with local boys.

Another of their country mates, Mehmood Khabaji was the first Iranian footballer to have landed in Kolkata in 1980s. He is also likely to come to Kolkata and take part in the exhibition match.

Khabaji is currently busy with his business and he is a resident of Dubai.

Jamshid told MyKhel, “I hope Majid will be able to come to Kolkata for the match although he has not received his visa yet.”
