Liverpool, Sep 7: Former Liverpool and Newcastle defender Jose Enrique has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31 after failing to recover from injury.

In an Instagram post announcing his retirement, he said: "It comes with a very heavy heart today to announce my retirement from professional football. It's been a very hard decision to take and accept."

"I would have loved to have played more years at my best level if my body would of let me but all good things have to come to an end and more in football. I just want to say huge thanks to all of the fans and clubs

"I have been blessed to play for some of the best teams in the world, with some of the best players in the world. these memories will stay with me forever."

Enrique showed up 127 times for Newcastle in between 2007 and 2011 before sealing a £6.5m move to Liverpool, for whom he played 99 times before leaving in September 2016.

The Spaniard battled with the injury issue f showing up in his last three seasons at the club. or the last couple of years and appeared only 21 times in his last three years at Anfield. Last year he was released from the club and he joined Spanish second tier Real Zaragoza.

However, the 31-year-old was also by the Spanish outlet this Summer for his knee injury issues and he suggested that he consulted many doctors to resolve the issue and had surgery on the injury in Spain. However, the problem did not heal properly and this has made him to take such a strong decision.

He said: "I could not play without medication, I did not even train. It was hard, desperate.

"Sometimes I got dizzy in training on so much medication.

"After every game my knee swelled like a ball and I was barely able to walk for three days. Something that was supposed to be for three months ended up turning into two years.

"I saw five doctors in England but they did not get the problem.

“I want to be an older man who can walk, not an invalid.”
