Former Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025-26 season after sustaining a serious knee injury during his home debut for Ajax.
The 29-year-old Ukraine international, who joined Ajax from Arsenal on a permanent transfer on February 1 following a brief and unsuccessful loan spell at Nottingham Forest, suffered the injury just minutes into the Eredivisie match against Fortuna Sittard at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Saturday.

Zinchenko, making his first start for the Dutch club after a late substitute appearance in his debut against AZ Alkmaar, went down in the early stages, reports indicate around the 2-6 minute mark, following a challenge with Fortuna's Dimitrios Limnios. He received immediate treatment on the pitch before being helped off and substituted.
Ajax confirmed the diagnosis in an official statement on Monday: "Oleksandr Zinchenko has been ruled out for an extended period. The defender suffered a knee injury last weekend in the early stages of the home match with Fortuna Sittard at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Examination at the hospital has shown that surgery is required. This will take place in the near future. The 29-year-old Ukraine international will then face a lengthy rehabilitation period, which means he will not play again this season."The club did not specify the exact nature of the knee injury beyond the need for surgical intervention, though initial speculation pointed to a potential anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) issue, common in such sudden, non-contact knee problems. Recovery timelines for knee surgery typically range from 6-9 months, aligning with reports of an extended absence.
Zinchenko's move to Ajax was intended to revive his career after limited playing time at Arsenal and a challenging loan at Forest. The versatile left-back/midfielder had hoped to regain form in the Eredivisie, but his stint has been limited to under 20 minutes of action across two appearances.
Ajax manager Fred Grim expressed initial uncertainty post-match, noting an MRI would clarify the severity. The team secured a 4-1 victory despite the early disruption, with goals from Jorthy Mokio, Rayane Bounida, and a brace by Mika Godts. The injury represents a significant setback for both Zinchenko and Ajax, who now turn to alternatives like Owen Wijndal at left-back. Zinchenko, a key figure for Ukraine internationally, faces a prolonged recovery as he prepares for surgery and rehabilitation.
