Former Barcelona and Inter Milan legend Samuel Eto'o involved in a huge scandal

Former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o has been accused of allegedly being involved in a match-fixing scandal.

Cameroon football's president is back in the headlines just days after his former vice-president, Njalla Quan, made broad allegations against him, saying that he exempted new Manchester United number one Andre Onana from the national team.

This time Eto'o has been accused of match-fixing to help promote a side to reach the top division from the second tier. In a leaked audio clip, Eto'o was caught speaking with the president of Victoria United, a team that was playing in Cameroon's second division at that moment.

In an audio recording from January 2023, Eto'o was caught promising to promote the team to the top level. He allegedly said: “Opopo must go up to the first division. This is our goal. This is our Federation. Victoria United will go up."

Now several months later the same side who were at the bottom of the table at that moment has been promoted. It came after the league leader, Stade de Bertoua was declared a general withdrawal by the Federation.

Furthermore, this is the club’s second promotion in three years. In 2020, Vitoria United leapt from the third to the second division. Eto’o was in charge at that moment as well and it now appears strange.

The current incident has sparked massive outrage among the local fans and supporters have started accusing the former Barcelona legend. Eto'o has not made any comment about it yet.

Eto'o is regarded as one of the top strikers ever to grace the field. The Cameroon international won four league titles and three UEFA Champions Leagues in his playing time. After retirement from football, he emerged into politics on a full-time basis in Cameroon.

He has been the President of the Cameroon Football Federation since December 2021 and also was the Ambassador of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
