Former Barcelona striker David Villa denies return to Europe rumours

London, Nov 21: David Villa has dismissed the rumours that he could be tempted to leave New York City and come back to Europe, claiming that he is not thinking about retirement any soon.

The World Cup-winning forward has been in America since 2014 and enjoying an impressive time in Major League Soccer side New York City FC.

The 35-year-old striker, who is Spain's record scorer with 59 goals from 98 appearances has been in a devastating form for New York City in 2017, scoring 22 times in MLS games, making him the league's top scorer.

However, the former Valencia player conceded that seeing his colleague, Italian legend Andre Pirlo, resign toward the finish of this season, was a reasonable message that Major League Soccer is no dull competition and that he should keep on working hard to keep up his level of play.

Villa also had striking five seasons at Valencia, three with Barcelona and one with Atletico Madrid in the top tier La Liga before he opted to leave for the United States, however, the forward now said that he does not regret the move and is very happy to be at MLS.

"[Seeing Pirlo retire showed me] that I have to train harder every day if I want to continue extending my career. Someday I will leave, as will everyone, it's a fact of life. But I'm going to fight to make it as late as possible," Villa told Marca.

"On the contrary, it was more than three years ago when I made the decision to come here and every day I am more convinced that it was the right decision."

A strong MLS season recently earned Villa a call-up for Spain this August after three years however due to an injury he could make it to the squad.

Villa has netted 65 times in 101 appearances for the MLS club till now in all competitions.
