Former England Football Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson Dies Aged 76

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away at 76 after battling cancer. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Eriksson revealed in January he had about a year to live. His emotional farewell was captured in an Amazon Prime documentary where he said, "I hope you will remember me as a positive guy, trying to do everything he could do. Don't be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds. It's been fantastic. Take care of yourself and take care of your life, and live it."

Eriksson made history as the first foreign manager to lead England's national team. He guided the team to the quarter-finals in both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and Euro 2004. During his tenure from 2001 to 2006, he managed 67 games. Only Walter Winterbottom (139), Alf Ramsey (113), Gareth Southgate (102), and Bobby Robson (95) have managed more matches for England.

Eriksson Passes Away at 76

After leaving the England job, Eriksson continued his managerial career with stints at Manchester City, Mexico, Ivory Coast, and Leicester City. He also had successful periods managing Benfica and Lazio, winning league titles with both clubs. Additionally, he lifted the Coppa Italia while managing Roma and Sampdoria.

A statement from Eriksson's family on Monday confirmed his passing: "After a long illness, Sven Goran-Eriksson died during the morning at home surrounded by family." The family includes daughter Lina; son Johan with wife Amana and granddaughter Sky; father Sven; girlfriend Yanisette with son Alcides; brother Lars-Erik with wife Jumnong. They requested privacy during their mourning period.

In his final days, Eriksson expressed his lifelong dream of coaching Liverpool. He was invited to lead a team of Liverpool legends against Ajax greats in a charity match at Anfield. The event was memorable for him as he received a standing ovation from a full house crowd.

Memorable Moments

Reflecting on that charity match experience, Eriksson described it as "absolutely beautiful," adding that it would remain a significant memory in his life. His contributions to football were widely recognised and appreciated by fans and colleagues alike.

The football community mourns the loss of Sven-Goran Eriksson but remembers him fondly for his achievements and positive spirit.
