Kolkata, March 30: Former India international woman footballer Shanta Dhara claimed that she was physically assaulted by her landlord over unpaid rent issue.

Dhara was assaulted by her landlord for unable to pay due rent a couple of years back. Her brother was arrested over false acquisition.

Shanta Dhara while speaking about the miserable incident said: “One day my landlord asked me to clear the tenancy dues.
"I requested him to wait for a couple of weeks more as my elder sister's husband was out of station. But the landlord Samir Jana became furious and started beating me brutally.
I went to nearby police station to lodge a complaint. I lodged a FIR also. Still police arrested my elder sister and her husband following my landlord's complaint! Later I persuaded to make them free."
Despite having represented Bengal and senior Indian football team for several times the 30-year-old striker has been fighting against poverty for more than last 20 years.
She lives in a colony in Howrah with her elder sister and her husband. After retiring from the game Shanta had no other alternative but to sell fish in the nearby market along with her sister's husband.
The former footballer said: “Still, I was living silently. I had made no complaint to anybody in spite of the fact that I have not received any help from anybody.
"But after being beaten by the landlord I felt I should not be silent anymore. So I decided to convey my pain to the media."
On Wednesday, one of Kolkata's renowned management company felicitated Shanta Dhara, presenting her a cheque for Rs 50,000 and Dhara was simply emotional.
She said: “For the first time I received financial assistance from an organisation. I am indebted to those people for the help."
Incidentally, former Indian international Subrata Bhattacharya stood beside Shanta and said: “I will personally request the state sports minister Arup Biswas and also to the All India Football Federation to come forward with financial help or provide a job for Shanta who had represented Bengal and India consistently."
