Former Inter chairman reveals Jose Mourinho regretted Real Madrid move

London, Dec 11: Former Inter Milan chairman Massimo Moratti in a recent interview has made a surprising claim as he revealed that the current Manchester United boss would have loved to remain at the San Siro before his Real Madrid move.

Mourinho has had a fruitful time at the Milan side where he claimed three consecutive league titles and one Champions League winner's medal after joining them from Premier League side Chelsea back in 2008.

But after having won the UCL titles with them, the Portuguese manager was persuaded by Real Madrid for a move to the Spanish Capital which he accepted and ended the association with Inter with a mutual consent.

However, Massimo Moratti, the then Inter Chairman now has claimed that Mourinho could have fancied a stay at Mian but repeated strong interest from Bernabeu tempted him to go there. However, according to him, the legendary manager soon regretted the decision as he considered Madrid move was more a business rather than a family.

“That Champions League Final was the end of a journey and as Interisti we appreciated the difficulties of getting there more than the final result,” Moratti said.

“After all, we couldn’t even celebrate it to the full, because after Mourinho left so soon afterwards.

“A year beforehand, Mourinho had told me that there was interest from Real Madrid. Then it was repeated.

“You cannot keep people prisoner, but it certainly wasn’t nice to see (Real Madrid President Florentino) Perez waiting in the car for Mou outside the Champions League Final at the Bernabeu.

“Mourinho himself regretted it even before he had made the move: a few hours later, in my office in Milan, he told me that he realised he was going to a business and not a family. Mourinho said that if he could, he would’ve remained at Inter.

“I told him to make his choices in absolute freedom. His tears upon leaving were real and I am pleased that still to this day he says he supports Inter.”

Mourinho spent three years at Madrid but won just One League titles. He later joined his former club Chelsea from Madrid and won another title with them in 2014 before joining rivals Manchester United last season.
