France Attacking Efficiency: Deschamps Calls For Sharper Finishing Vs Morocco

Didier Deschamps insists the World Cup quarter-final against Morocco will not mark the end of time as France head coach and has challenged France to punish chances more ruthlessly. France chase a third World Cup title, while Deschamps is targeting a second triumph as manager after winning the tournament in 2018.

Deschamps is also managing disciplinary risks inside the squad before the France World Cup quarter-final. FIFA has rejected an appeal from the French Football Federation to overturn Michael Olise's yellow card from the last-16 win against Paraguay. The decision leaves Olise one booking away from a ban that would rule Olise out of a possible semi-final.

Olise received the caution following a confrontation with Matias Galarza, who went down clutching the face. Television replays showed Olise grabbing Galarza's shirt rather than making contact with the head, which led the FFF to challenge the booking. FIFA's stance contrasts with Folarin Balogun's case, where a one-match suspension was deferred for one year.

Deschamps confirmed the unsuccessful appeal when speaking to the media before the France World Cup quarter-final. "There was no change with Olise's yellow card, Deschamps added. We received from FIFA a decision on [Wednesday] that Olise's yellow card remains." Deschamps must now weigh that risk when selecting the line-up against Morocco.

The meeting with Morocco will be Deschamps' 25th World Cup match as a manager, equalling Helmut Schon's record from 1966 to 1978. Deschamps already holds the outright record for most World Cup wins as a coach, with 19 victories, all achieved with France. Data from the Opta supercomputer rates France as 27% favourites to claim the trophy.

France have impressed with attacking numbers heading into the France World Cup quarter-final. France share the tournament lead for goals scored with Argentina, on 14 goals each. France rank fourth for total attempts with 88 shots, and no side has more efforts on target than France, with 39. Kylian Mbappe has scored seven times and sits joint-second in the Golden Boot standings.

Deschamps is pleased with the output yet demands sharper finishing from France. "We have to be efficient, offensively speaking, Deschamps told a press conference. In all the areas, both teams have strong assets. We are efficient, but we could have done better on this front. Sometimes you have six chances and score two goals, and sometimes you have two chances and score twice. It is more important to be efficient."

Questions continue about whether Deschamps will remain in the role after the World Cup, as Deschamps is expected to step down once the tournament finishes. Deschamps dismissed the idea that the Morocco tie could be the final match of reign. "I absolutely don't think so, because the previous match could also have been the last. In my mind, and with my coaching staff, our goal is to do everything necessary so that things go as well as possible. After that, in football, there are obviously different possibilities, but in my mind, I am only concerned with facing the Moroccan national team, and I am completely focused on this match so that things go the way we want."

France therefore approach the France World Cup quarter-final with strong statistical backing, clear tactical demands from Deschamps and a settled mindset around future plans. The main concerns now centre on keeping discipline, protecting players such as Olise from suspension and converting chances with the efficiency Deschamps believes is needed to progress.
