France World Cup Preparation Reminder After Ivory Coast Defeat

France’s 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast has shifted focus onto defensive lapses and sharp finishing, just days before Didier Deschamps finalises World Cup plans. Rayan Cherki’s opener was cancelled out by Guela Doue and Amad Diallo, leaving Les Bleus searching for answers before facing Northern Ireland and then Senegal on 16 June.

Deschamps stressed that the setback arrives at a useful moment, with France still adjusting their squad after the Champions League final. Several Paris Saint-Germain players, including Ousmane Dembele and Doue, were rested at kick-off, while Bradley Barcola and Warren Zaire-Emery appeared late, underlining how rotation affected rhythm and chemistry.

France World Cup prep hit by Ivory Coast loss

France started strongly and took the lead through Cherki, who strengthened the case for a starting role at the World Cup. Ivory Coast replied eight minutes after half-time, when Nicolas Pepe slipped Guela Doue through to equalise. Diallo then met Doue’s cross six minutes from time, steering past Mike Maignan into the bottom-left corner.

Deschamps accepted responsibility for a performance that faded after the interval and pointed to the style of their opponents. "A defeat is never pleasant, even if we did some good things in the first half, Deschamps said. In the second half we made a lot of changes, but that's no excuse. We were not as good after the break, and they brought a lot of pace. We will face the same type of team on June 16."

The match data highlighted France’s wastefulness in front of goal against Ivory Coast. Les Bleus attempted 15 shots yet produced an expected goals figure of only 0.88. Ivory Coast, by contrast, created 1.31 xG from just seven efforts, hitting the target three times and capitalising on France’s looseness in key defensive situations.

Les Bleus now turn towards Northern Ireland, aiming to correct the defeat before travelling to MetLife Stadium. That fixture against Senegal on 16 June opens Group I, where France also face Iraq, who drew with Spain in a friendly on Thursday, and Norway, in a schedule that will demand consistent focus across all three matches.

France World Cup mindset after Ivory Coast setback

Deschamps underlined that the loss to Ivory Coast must act as a reality check ahead of the World Cup. "It's a reminder, if we need one, not to think we're better than we are, Deschamps added." The coach also warned that France will meet opponents with similar pace and athletic qualities once the tournament begins.

Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni preferred to view the Ivory Coast defeat as part of the build-up process rather than a major warning sign. "It's a pity to lose, but we're in a preparation phase, we stay confident, Tchouameni said. There is no conclusion to draw from this game, even if we had won it. We will be ready."

Defender Lucas Hernandez struck a similar tone, pointing to the number of changes as France experimented during the Ivory Coast game. "We always want to win, but we're in a phase of preparation and there were a lot of substitutions." The comments suggested the squad remains calm, despite outside scrutiny of the result.

Cherki, however, aligned more closely with Deschamps’ concern about possible complacency in France’s World Cup preparations. "It's a little warning, and I can tell you we're not going to the World Cup thinking we're favourites, but we're going to crush everyone, Cherki said." The forward’s display strengthened competition for attacking roles within a squad already containing Champions League and European champions.

Historically, this was France’s first friendly defeat between May and June before a major finals since a 1-0 loss to China before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Deschamps and the players now look to respond against Northern Ireland, aiming to adjust details rather than overhaul plans as the World Cup countdown continues.
