Mbappe Extends World Cup Knockout Record As France Dazzles Against Sweden

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France beat Sweden 3-0, sending France into the World Cup last 16. The result sets up a knockout tie with Paraguay, while Mbappe moved clear for most goals in World Cup knockout matches, reaching 10. Mbappe also increased the overall World Cup total to 18 goals in just 18 finals appearances.

Those two goals kept Mbappe close to Lionel Messi in the all-time World Cup scoring list. Mbappe now has 18 World Cup goals, one behind Messi’s 19. Both players sit ahead of Miroslav Klose, who has been overtaken. Mbappe and Messi each have six goals at this year’s tournament, driving the Golden Boot contest.

Mbappe Extends World Cup Knockout Record

This Sweden match was Mbappe’s 18th World Cup appearance for France. Only Hugo Lloris, with 20 games, and Antoine Griezmann, with 19, have played more for France in the tournament. Since Mbappe’s World Cup debut in 2018, no player has scored more World Cup goals than Mbappe’s 18.

Across that same period, no player has produced more World Cup goal contributions than Mbappe, who has 22. Messi is next with 14 goals and 19 total contributions. Mbappe also has 10 goals from nine World Cup knockout games, moving above Leonidis and Ronaldo Nazario, who both scored eight knockout goals.

The numbers underline Mbappe’s attacking influence against Sweden. France attempted 25 shots, with expected goals of 3.17. Mbappe took five of those attempts, generating 0.63 expected goals. Only Michael Olise shot more often, with six efforts. Mbappe’s finishing accuracy, combined with constant movement, repeatedly stretched Sweden’s back line.

Olise’s creative display added another historic World Cup mark for France. Olise finished the group stage on five assists, the most by any player at a single World Cup since Thomas Hassler provided five for Germany in 1994. That output supports France’s attack, which has become the first team to score three goals in five straight World Cup matches.

Didier Deschamps returned to the touchline for France, after missing time following the death of Deschamps’ mother. Sweden started brightly, with Alexander Isak finding space early and shooting at Mike Maignan. That chance proved a warning, as France then took control of territory, possession and tempo for most of the contest.

Mbappe thought France led after 20 minutes when racing through a gap in Sweden’s defence before finishing low past Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, but an offside flag cut short the celebrations. Soon after, Mbappe was free at the back post and struck the upright, with the ball rebounding off Victor Lindelof towards Zetterstrom.

France continued to threaten with inventive efforts. Olise met a looping clearance with an overhead kick that struck the far post from just inside the area. Ousmane Dembele then curled the rebound wide. France finally broke through on the stroke of half-time when a short corner routine reached Dembele, who crossed for Mbappe.

The Real Madrid forward collected the pass, left Viktor Gyokeres on the turf, then drove a fierce shot into the right side of the net. That finish gave France a deserved 1-0 advantage at half-time. Sweden struggled to create much response before the interval and looked stretched across the defensive line.

France doubled the lead in the 53rd minute with another move built through Olise. Olise slipped a through ball between Gustaf Lagerbielke’s legs, releasing Bradley Barcola. Barcola struck powerfully past Zetterstrom for 2-0. Olise continued chasing a first goal of the finals, forcing a fingertip save from distance and later seeing a low effort smothered.

Olise still added to the tally of assists. Another precisely weighted pass sent Mbappe clear, and Mbappe lifted the finish over Zetterstrom for 3-0. Sweden mounted a late push, with Gyokeres driving a low shot after reacting first to a loose ball, but Maignan stretched down to preserve a clean sheet.

The French national team account later highlighted the victory and last-16 qualification on social media.

France now advance to face Paraguay in the last 16 with strong attacking numbers and defensive stability. Mbappe stands one goal behind Messi in the World Cup rankings and leads all players in goals and contributions since 2018, while Olise’s five assists underline the growing depth in France’s creative options.
