Thomas Frank is eager to retain Son Heung-min at Tottenham Hotspur, valuing his adaptability as the forward faces speculation about a move to MLS. Los Angeles FC has been mentioned as a possible destination for the 33-year-old, whose contract with Spurs runs until the end of the 2025-26 season. Son has spent a decade with Tottenham and ranks second in their Premier League scoring history, trailing only Harry Kane's 213 goals with his own tally of 127.
Son's performance in the 2024-25 season was his least productive since joining Tottenham in 2015-16, netting eight goals across all competitions. Last season, he scored 11 times in 46 appearances as Spurs ended up 17th in the Premier League. Despite securing a Europa League final win against Manchester United, Son played only 23 minutes due to injury issues late in the campaign.

The arrival of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham has increased competition in Tottenham's attack, raising questions about Son's future. However, during a press conference before Thursday's friendly against Arsenal in Hong Kong, Frank dismissed these rumours. "Right now, Son is here. I'm very happy about that," Frank stated. "He is training well. I said in the last press conference that he is a great character."
Frank appreciates Son's ability to play both centrally and on the left flank, which gives him an edge over other attackers vying for playing time. Last season, Son spent 82% of his minutes on the left wing and 18% through the centre. Frank noted that having depth in the squad is crucial and highlighted Richarlison as more of a striker who can also play wide.
Since joining Spurs in August 2015, Son has made more appearances for the club than any other player across all competitions (454 games). He also holds the record for most starts (366) during this period, with only Kane surpassing his goal involvements (297) compared to Son's 269.
"I think everyone knows Son has been one of the best players at Tottenham in the last 10 years," Frank added. "I think he has been hugely successful from the left wing." He also praised Son's performances as a number nine down the middle.
Frank emphasised that having versatile players like Son is vital for getting top talent on the field. "The thing about Sonny is that he will always score goals," Frank said. "So it is just about getting him in those situations."
