Frank Lampard, a former Chelsea and England midfielder, has been appointed as the new head coach of Coventry City. He has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the club. Coventry City is currently positioned 17th in the Championship. Lampard replaces Mark Robins, who was dismissed three weeks ago. Robins had been with the club since March 2017, achieving two promotions and reaching both the Championship play-off final and an FA Cup semi-final.
Lampard's managerial career includes stints at Derby County, Everton, and Chelsea twice. His first game with Coventry will be against Cardiff at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday. While he led Derby to the Championship play-off final in 2019, his recent tenure at Chelsea was less successful. He recorded a win percentage of just 11.11% (W1 D2 L8), marking the lowest for any Chelsea manager overseeing more than one match.

Coventry City's owner, Doug King, expressed his satisfaction with Lampard's appointment. "I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach," said King. He believes Lampard's experience in the Championship and his time at Chelsea and Everton will benefit Coventry's squad. King is confident that Lampard understands what it takes to succeed at the top level.
Lampard's previous role saw him manage Everton for nearly a year, where he managed to keep them in the Premier League. However, his record included only 12 wins out of 44 matches (D8 L24). During his tenure at Goodison Park, Everton had the second-worst expected goals against in the Premier League (61.5).
This role marks Lampard's return to management since leaving Chelsea for a second time in June 2023. Despite challenges during his last stint at Chelsea, where he averaged only 0.56 points per game—the third-lowest for a Chelsea manager in Premier League history—Lampard remains optimistic about leading Coventry City forward.
Coventry City's official Twitter account shared their excitement about Lampard's appointment:
Lampard's journey through various clubs has equipped him with valuable insights into football management. His experiences are expected to bring fresh perspectives to Coventry City as they aim for success in the Championship under his leadership.
