Freiburg Seek First Major Trophy In Europa League Final Against Aston Villa In Istanbul

Freiburg have set up a Europa League final against Aston Villa in Istanbul on 20 May, chasing the club’s first major trophy and a Champions League place. Centre-back Matthias Ginter is embracing what is viewed within the club as a unique moment in Freiburg’s history.

The meeting with Aston Villa offers Freiburg a direct path into next season’s Champions League and a permanent place in club folklore. "We just need to take that final step now, centre-back Ginter said afterwards. We've come this far, we're now facing the most important match in the club's history, and we're determined to win it. For Freiburg, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The whole day, the atmosphere... it was incredible."

Freiburg chase first major trophy

Freiburg booked the Europa League final spot by beating Braga 3-1 at the Europa-Park Stadion on Thursday, overturning a 2-1 first-leg defeat in their semi-final. Lukas Kubler scored twice, providing the key goals in the second leg, as Freiburg turned the tie around in front of home supporters.

The match swung early when Mario Dorgeles, who had hit Braga’s winner in the first leg, received the earliest-ever red card in a Europa League semi-final after just seven minutes. Reduced to ten players, Braga struggled to contain Freiburg’s pressure, and the Bundesliga side capitalised to secure a historic progression.

This will be Freiburg’s first appearance in a European final, marking a new peak for the club. They also became the first German team to advance from a European semi-final after losing the first leg since Werder Bremen overcame Hamburger SV in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup.

Freiburg’s form at the Europa-Park Stadion has been a major factor in this run. The team have now recorded 11 successive Europa League home victories, equalling the competition record first achieved by Sevilla between April 2014 and March 2016, underlining the strength of Freiburg’s performances in front of their own fans.

Europa League final emotions and probabilities for Freiburg

Head coach Julian Schuster struggled to hold back tears when reflecting on the scale of the club’s achievement. "I feel an incredible sense of joy when I look at everyone's faces. That's what matters most today," he said. "I believe the most important thing is to know who you are. That's what sets the people here in the region apart – they know what moments like this mean."

The Opta supercomputer gives Freiburg a 35% chance of lifting the Europa League trophy, with Aston Villa rated as 65% favourites for the final. The numbers highlight Freiburg’s underdog status, yet also show a realistic opportunity to turn this deep run into the first major silverware in club history.

Team Chance of winning Europa League

With Istanbul hosting the Europa League final on 20 May, Freiburg carry regional pride, a record home streak and a rare chance at Champions League qualification into their meeting with Aston Villa. The team’s response to setbacks in the semi-final suggests belief that this season can deliver a defining triumph.
