Freiburg Suffer Europa League Final Defeat As Grief Prevails
Aston Villa denied Freiburg a first major trophy, winning the Europa League final 3-0 in Istanbul. Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers settled the contest. Freiburg created little in attack and could not turn a historic appearance into silverware.
Freiburg were in only the second major final in the club’s history and again left without a title. Aston Villa controlled key moments on both sides of half-time, while Freiburg rarely troubled the Premier League side’s defence during a largely one-sided showpiece.

The attacking numbers underlined Freiburg’s difficulty. Freiburg had just four attempts, producing 0.3 expected goals, and only two efforts tested the goalkeeper. Freiburg also recorded only 12 touches inside Aston Villa’s penalty area, leaving Freiburg unable to build sustained pressure on the English team.
Aston Villa struck first through Tielemans, then Buendia doubled the advantage before the break. Rogers added a third after half-time, closing any hope of a Freiburg comeback. Conceding at those moments left Freiburg chasing the game, while Aston Villa stayed compact and efficient on transitions throughout.

After the defeat, Julian Schuster highlighted the pain of losing more than the achievement of reaching the final. The Freiburg head coach spoke of grief and frustration, with the performance falling short against an Aston Villa side that punished key defensive lapses.
"For the moment, I don't feel any satisfaction. We lost a final, and that overshadows everything else right now and hurts a lot," Schuster told RTL. "When you're 2-0 down and concede goals just before half-time, that shows the true character of a team. The way they tried was okay. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. With a few days' notice, we'll certainly be able to reflect on what we accomplished and what we achieved together with our fans. But right now, grief prevails."
The result extended a difficult pattern for German clubs in the UEFA Cup and Europa League. German teams have now lost four of the last five finals in this competition. Eintracht Frankfurt’s triumph against Rangers in 2022 remains the single recent success for Bundesliga sides.
Europa League final: Freiburg’s campaign and future European place
Across the tournament, Freiburg produced a strong overall run despite the final defeat. Freiburg scored 25 Europa League goals during the campaign, which makes Freiburg the fifth-highest scoring German team in a single season of the competition since 2009-10, highlighting consistent attacking play before Istanbul.
Domestic results shaped Freiburg’s European future for next season. Freiburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga, missing qualification for the Champions League. That league position sends Freiburg into the Conference League instead, giving the squad another chance in continental competition, but at a different level.
Freiburg leave Istanbul with disappointment from the 3-0 loss to Aston Villa but also with recognition of a deep Europa League run. The club reached a rare major final, delivered high scoring numbers across the season, yet still waits for a first trophy and Champions League football.
