Frenkie De Jong Expresses Doubts About Ankle Injury Recovery Before Netherlands Return

Frenkie de Jong reflects on his challenging recovery from an ankle injury and anticipates rejoining the Netherlands national team for upcoming matches.

Frenkie de Jong, a key player for Barcelona, has been grappling with an ankle injury that left him uncertain about his recovery. After spending nearly six months off the field, he returned to action last month. However, he hasn't played for the Netherlands since September 2023 due to recurring ankle problems.

These injuries kept him out of most of the Euro 2024 qualifiers and the final tournament in Germany, where the Netherlands lost to England in the semi-finals. De Jong is expected to play in the Nations League against Hungary in Amsterdam on Saturday, marking a significant step in his return to international football.

De Jong Looks Forward to Netherlands Return

The midfielder expressed doubts about his recovery journey. "Did I wonder whether I would ever fully recover? That crossed my mind sometimes, but I always had the confidence that I would eventually be able to play football again," De Jong shared with reporters. He was unsure how long it would take for his ankle to heal completely.

Missing this year's European Championships was particularly challenging for De Jong. A late goal by Ollie Watkins ended the Netherlands' hopes of replicating their Euro 1988 success. "That was tough. I watched all the matches of the Dutch national team but not much of the rest," he admitted.

In a recent LaLiga match against Real Sociedad, De Jong was substituted after sustaining a blow near his shin and another kick. Despite initial concerns, he confirmed it wasn't related to his knee or ankle injuries. "I knew it was not a serious injury, but it did bother me a lot," he explained.

As De Jong prepares for upcoming matches, his focus remains on regaining full fitness and contributing significantly to both club and country performances. His determination reflects his commitment to overcoming challenges and returning stronger than before.
