Cody Gakpo is optimistic about replicating his Euro 2024 form for Liverpool in the Premier League under Arne Slot's leadership. Gakpo, who shared the Golden Boot at the European Championships with three goals, has struggled to secure a regular starting position since joining Anfield last year.
During Euro 2024, Gakpo excelled for Ronald Koeman's team. He became the first Dutch player since Frank Rijkaard in 1992 to score and assist in a knockout-stage game, achieving this feat against Romania in the last 16. Additionally, he led all Netherlands players in shots (12), shots on target (eight), chances created from open play (11), and expected assists (1.9).

Gakpo also created ten chances from ball carries during the tournament, shooting five times himself and setting up teammates five times. Only Lamine Yamal (15) and Kylian Mbappe (11) surpassed his total. Reflecting on his performance, Gakpo said, "I'm very confident. It was a good Euros for me [but] unfortunately we lost to England."
Since joining Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven, Gakpo has shown versatility across the forward line, playing both out wide and as a central striker. Last season, he made 27 of his 53 appearances as a lone striker, contributing to 15 of his 22 goal involvements from that position.
This season under Slot's guidance, Gakpo discussed his role: "Yeah, I spoke to him and obviously he sees me as a left winger. That's how I think he sees me," Gakpo explained. He acknowledged the need for flexibility due to potential injuries throughout the season.
Despite not securing a regular starting spot yet, Gakpo remains hopeful about his future at Liverpool. He scored 16 goals across all competitions last season, including eight in the Premier League. His confidence is high after his performances in Germany.
"I'm very happy to be back, full of confidence and I need to keep performing like that here as well," Gakpo stated on Liverpool's website. He aims to continue helping the club with his abilities and adapt to any position required by Slot.
The upcoming Premier League campaign will be crucial for Gakpo as he looks to solidify his place in Liverpool's squad and replicate his international success at the club level.
