Galatasaray Rally Seals 5-2 Victory Over Juventus In Champions League Play-off

Galatasaray defeated Juventus 5-2 in the Champions League play-off at Rams Park. Gabriel Sara opened the scoring and assisted Davinson Sanchez, while Teun Koopmeiners and Noa Lang traded goals before Lang and Sacha Boey sealed the win. A red card for Juan Cabal shaped the second half, boosting Galatasaray’s dominance.

Galatasaray took a major step towards the Champions League group stage, beating 10-man Juventus 5-2 in the play-off first leg at Rams Park. Gabriel Sara, Davinson Sanchez, Teun Koopmeiners, Noa Lang and Sacha Boey all scored in a wide-open contest.

The hosts produced their first ever five-goal performance in a Champions League match, while Juventus conceded five for the first time in the competition. Galatasaray also created the better chances on the night, leaving the Italian side facing a difficult second leg.

Galatasaray stun Juventus 5-2 in thriller

Okan Buruk’s team broke through after 15 minutes. Bremer’s poor clearance dropped to Gabriel Sara, who finished clinically. Juventus hit back almost immediately, as Teun Koopmeiners reacted quickest to a rebound after Pierre Kalulu’s initial header was saved.

Koopmeiners then put Juventus ahead shortly after the half-hour mark, striking into the top-left corner from the edge of the penalty area. That lead did not last long after the interval, because Noa Lang, on loan from Napoli since last month, levelled four minutes into the second half.

The match shifted decisively during a frantic eight-minute passage. First, Sara’s powerful free-kick was glanced on by Davinson Sanchez, leaving Michele Di Gregorio wrong-footed as Galatasaray moved back in front. Soon after, second-half substitute Juan Cabal collected a second yellow card, reducing Juventus to 10 players.

With Juventus short-handed, Galatasaray took control. Lang added his second and Galatasaray’s fourth after Juventus lost possession inside their own box. Late on, Victor Osimhen drove forward and created space for Sacha Boey, who came off the bench, broke into the area and scored the fifth goal.

Galatasaray vs Juventus stats and records

Across the 90 minutes, Galatasaray created more and better chances than Juventus and applied greater pressure in attack. Expected goals and total attempts reflected that superiority, with the Turkish side more aggressive in open play and from set-pieces.

Galatasaray finished with 2.96 expected goals from 22 shots, compared with Juventus’ 1.13 xG from seven attempts. Sara attempted a team-high three shots, created seven chances and completed 59 passes. Sara also became the first Galatasaray player to score and assist in a Champions League knockout match since Wesley Sneijder against Real Madrid in April 2013.

The 5-2 scoreline, the numerical advantage and the underlying data all leave Galatasaray strongly placed before the second leg of this Champions League play-off. Juventus, having conceded five and lost Juan Cabal, must respond at home to keep qualification hopes alive.
