Before Southgate's official clarification, several rumours suggested that Wayne Rooney might be stripped of the captaincy and Jordan Henderson may get the prestigious armband.
Gareth Southgate, on Wednesday, November 30, was officially offered the role to manage the Three Lions national side on a full-time basis.
Southgate had replaced Sam Allardyce in October on a part-time basis after the latter was involved in a scandal.
Speaking about Wayne Rooney, Southgate told BBC: "Being an England player comes with additional responsibility. I don't think laying down the law is necessary with this group of players.
"There has to be respect and treat them as adults and there has to be trust between coach and players. There has to be guidelines but players have to take leadership in that."
Wayne Rooney's position in the starting XI was in doubts after his continuous poor form for both club and country.
The experienced English international had lost his place in the Manchester United starting line-up which raised several doubts over his international career.
But as it seems now, the new England manager does not doubt Rooney's abilities and feels that he is still the right man to lead the team.
