Gareth Southgate, the former manager of England's national football team, has been honoured with a knighthood in the King's New Year Honours list. Southgate stepped down from his position in July after guiding England to their first final on foreign soil at Euro 2024, where they were narrowly defeated 2-1 by Spain. This marked the second consecutive European Championship final under his leadership, following their initial appearance at Wembley during Euro 2020.

During his eight-year tenure, which began in September 2016 when he succeeded Sam Allardyce, Southgate led England to four major tournaments. Under his guidance, the team reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Additionally, they secured two runner-up positions in the European Championships.

Southgate managed a total of 102 matches for England, achieving victory in 61 games and overseeing the team as they scored 223 goals. His record of 14 wins at major tournaments is unmatched by any other manager in England's history. Furthermore, during his leadership, England reached more finals (two) in just four attempts than they had in their previous 23 appearances at both the World Cup and Euros.

Southgate joins an esteemed group of former England managers who have received knighthoods. He follows Walter Winterbottom, Alf Ramsey—who led England to World Cup victory—and Bobby Robson, who guided the team to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup. His influence extended beyond results; he fostered a strong connection between fans and players.

Debbie Hewitt, Chair of The Football Association (FA), praised Southgate's impact: "He brought our fans closer than ever to the team, stood up for what he believed in and inspired players to share his pride in representing England." She added that knowing him as both a person and manager has been a privilege. "All of us who have experienced his thoughtfulness, dedication and leadership are delighted with this wonderful news," she said.
