Gareth Southgate has decided not to take on any new management roles for at least a year. He is also unlikely to manage another national team. After England's 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Southgate stepped down as England manager, ending an 11-year tenure with the Football Association (FA).
During his eight years leading the senior team, Southgate guided England to the finals of both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. He also led them to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. His achievements make him the most successful England manager since Alf Ramsey, who won the World Cup in 1966.

Reflecting on his time with England, Southgate shared insights at the European Club Association's general assembly. "Sometimes when you are in a big role you don't realise the weight until it's gone," he remarked, as reported by Reuters. "It is one of those jobs where everybody has an opinion."
Southgate expressed contentment with his current life and stressed that he is not in a hurry to return to coaching. "I am enjoying my life, so there is no rush," he stated. He emphasised his commitment over the past 11 years to the national federation and confirmed he would not coach within the next year.
There have been rumours linking Southgate to a potential move to club football, particularly with Manchester United considering him as a replacement for Erik ten Hag. However, it remains uncertain how his break from coaching will affect these prospects.
Southgate did not rule out a return to club football if the right opportunity arises. "Club football? Depending on what role that is," he mentioned. He acknowledged having worked with exceptional players and highlighted the importance of passion and excitement in any future role.
Despite speculation about future roles, Southgate seems firm about not managing another national team. "It is unlikely to be another national federation," he said. "England was from the heart."
The former manager appears focused on taking time for himself after leaving such a significant position. His decision reflects a desire for personal space and time away from high-pressure roles.
