Garnacho Remorseful After Manchester United Exit To Chelsea, Reflects On Departure

Alejandro Garnacho reflects on leaving Manchester United with mixed feelings, admitting mistakes while also stressing respect for the club. The Argentina international, now at Chelsea, accepts that some choices near the end of his Old Trafford spell were wrong, even though Garnacho believes the move to London suits the next stage of a developing career.

Since joining Chelsea in August for a reported £40m fee, Garnacho has featured regularly. The winger has played 37 matches in all competitions this season and scored eight goals. Those numbers show Chelsea trust Garnacho, after a difficult final period at Manchester United under head coach Ruben Amorim.

Garnacho regrets United exit

Garnacho arrived at Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid as a 16-year-old and developed through the academy. Across all competitions, Garnacho made 144 senior appearances for Manchester United and scored 26 goals. The winger helped Manchester United reach the Europa League final in the last campaign at the club.

That season, Garnacho played 58 times and was a regular part of Amorim’s squad, yet the role began to shrink. In the Europa League final, a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham, Garnacho entered from the bench for only the last 20 minutes. Afterwards, Garnacho’s brother publicly claimed Amorim had thrown the winger under the bus.

There were also off-field issues near the end of Garnacho’s time in Manchester. Garnacho was photographed wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford’s name on the back. The image drew criticism from some supporters and observers. Garnacho later accepted that the incident formed part of behaviour that did not reflect well during that period.

The contrast between Garnacho’s full Manchester United career and the current Chelsea season can be seen in the figures below.

Despite the emotional nature of the move, Garnacho maintains that the relationship with Manchester United as a club remains positive. Garnacho’s regret centres on personal reactions during a period of limited playing time. The winger accepts that expectation to start every match at 20 years old was unrealistic, and that frustration affected decisions.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Garnacho explained the emotional pull Manchester United still holds and how views on the exit have changed with time. Garnacho described the early support after arriving from Spain and the progress through the academy to the first team as a major part of personal growth and professional development.

"Maybe yes, because I loved that club. They gave me confidence from the start, he told Sky Sports. From Spain, to bring me to the academy, then they brought me to the first team. So, it was four or five years, and amazing love from everyone. I remember in the last six months, I was just not playing like before at Manchester United. I started to be on the bench. That's not a bad thing. I was only 20 years old, but in my mind, it was like I had to play every game. In my mind, maybe it is also on me. I started to do some bad things. But yes, it was just this moment in life, and sometimes, you have to make decisions. I am really proud to be here [at Chelsea] and still in the Premier League at a club like this. Everyone knows the team we have and the things we can do. Sometimes, we have better moments or worse moments, I am proud to be here, but with United, I have nothing wrong to say about the club, no-one in the club or the team-mates. It's just a moment in life that changes and life continues. I have no regrets. From the fans, the stadium, everything was really good. It's just sometimes you have to change for the good of your life or the next steps. I only have good memories of Man United."

The winger now focuses on Chelsea’s ambitions in the Premier League and other competitions. Garnacho believes the squad at Stamford Bridge can reach a high level, even if performances fluctuate. While there is acceptance of past errors, Garnacho stresses that the decision to switch clubs supports long-term aims.

For Manchester United supporters and neutral observers across the Middle East and beyond, Garnacho’s story offers a picture of a young player learning under pressure. The Argentina international keeps strong affection for Old Trafford, yet now channels energy into Chelsea, with the statistics this season suggesting a stable role in the London club’s plans.
