Gaurav Bora went without an ISL goal for Seven Seasons, then he made History with Churchill Brothers
Gaurav Bora was born in Guwahati, some 2,900 kms in the North-East from Goa, but after Sunday (October 11), he has become an indispensable part of Churchill Brothers' footballing folklore.
For a defender, the biggest victories often come from stopping goals. But on Sunday night in Goa, Gaurav Bora found himself on the other side of the story.

The Churchill Brothers centre-back found the net, turning a personal milestone into a memorable moment for his club.
Bora's 56th-minute strike against Mumbai City FC opened the scoring in Churchill Brothers' 2-1 victory on October 11. It was his first-ever ISL goal in his 84th appearance in the competition, making the occasion particularly special as the Red Machines began their new chapter in India's top flight.
Gaurav Bora's journey from Guwahati to the ISL
Born in Guwahati, Assam, Bora developed his game through the FC Pune City academy before beginning his senior career with Chennai City FC on loan. His early years brought success in the I-League, where he was part of the Chennai City side that won the title in the 2018-19 season. He also scored twice during that campaign, showing that finding the net was not entirely unfamiliar to him.
Bora's performances earned him an opportunity in the ISL, joining Odisha FC in 2019. He made 10 appearances in his debut season before featuring more regularly in the 2020-21 campaign. His time at Odisha helped him establish himself as a defender capable of competing at the highest level of Indian club football.
He subsequently moved to NorthEast United FC in 2022, spending two seasons with the Highlanders before joining Mohammedan SC in 2024. Across these spells, Bora continued to build his experience, primarily contributing at the back rather than on the scoresheet.
But Sunday marked his first goal in the Indian Super League, on his 8th season at the top flight of Indian football. When was the last time the 28-year-old scored? It was back in the I-League days with Chennai City FC in the 2018-19 season.
A historic night for Churchill Brothers
Churchill Brothers' move into the ISL presented Bora with a fresh challenge. The experienced defender became part of a squad seeking to make an impression against established clubs, and his contribution against Mumbai City proved decisive.
His 56th-minute goal gave Churchill Brothers the lead before Sebastián Gutiérrez doubled their advantage in the 87th minute. Mumbai City pulled one back through a penalty in stoppage time, but the Goan side held on for a 2-1 win.
For Bora, the goal was a long-awaited breakthrough in the ISL. After 83 appearances without scoring, his 84th outing finally brought a moment of personal glory.
The significance extended beyond individual statistics. The goal is not just a personal landmark for him, but a significant piece of history for the Goan club, which has been out of Indian football's brightest limelight for a long time.
