Gennaro Gattuso Prioritises Moldova Match Over World Cup Play-Off Concerns

Gennaro Gattuso emphasises the importance of Italy's World Cup qualifier against Moldova, urging his team to focus on improvement and teamwork while considering potential play-off scenarios.

Italy's national football team, led by Gennaro Gattuso, is concentrating on their World Cup qualifier against Moldova. Despite securing at least a second-place finish in Group I with 15 points from six matches, Italy still has a chance to surpass Norway. However, this would require Norway to lose both of their remaining games, including the final match against Italy.

Gattuso emphasises that his attention is solely on the upcoming game rather than potential play-offs in March. "I am honest, my mind is on tomorrow's game and not beyond that. I want to see improvement, how the players train and work together," he stated. He appreciates the commitment of players like Nicolo Barella, Riccardo Calafiori, and Alessandro Bastoni for participating despite minor injuries.

Gattuso Focuses on Moldova Match Ahead

Norway currently leads the group with a superior goal difference of +26 compared to Italy's +10. They are also the top scorers in UEFA qualifying. Italy has historically dominated Moldova, winning all previous encounters with an aggregate score of 17-2. Yet, Gattuso warns against complacency, especially if Norway falters against Estonia.

In June, Italy secured a 2-0 win over Moldova with goals from Giacomo Raspadori and Andrea Cambiaso. This match marked Luciano Spalletti's last as coach. Gattuso cautions against underestimating any opponent: "There is absolutely nothing easy about any games. Don't forget the game in Reggio Emilia four months ago."

Italy's campaign was hindered by a 3-0 loss to Norway in their opening qualifier. This defeat has contributed to their struggle to qualify for recent World Cups. When asked about changes he would make to Italy's campaign, Gattuso pointed out issues with FIFA and UEFA's group formats.

Critique of Qualification System

Gattuso expressed dissatisfaction with the current qualification system: "There are no regrets. Winning helps us to win, so that is up to us now." He compared Europe's system unfavourably with South America's, where more teams qualify directly for the World Cup. "That is the disappointment; the system needs to change in Europe," he added.

Despite these challenges, Gattuso remains focused on ensuring his team performs well in upcoming matches. The Italian squad aims to maintain professionalism and hunger as they prepare for crucial games ahead.

The Italian team's journey continues as they aim for success in their remaining qualifiers while keeping an eye on potential changes needed within European football's qualification framework.
