Germany And Italy Draw 3-3 In Nations League Quarter-Final, Germany Advances On Aggregate Score

In a dramatic Nations League quarter-final, Germany drew 3-3 with Italy but advanced 5-4 on aggregate. Key performances from Joshua Kimmich and Moise Kean defined the match.

Italy's spirited comeback in the second half wasn't enough as they drew 3-3 with Germany in their Nations League quarter-final second leg. Despite the draw, Italy was eliminated with a 5-4 aggregate loss. A poor first-half performance left Italy trailing 3-0 at halftime, with goals from Joshua Kimmich and Tim Kleindienst surrounding a peculiar Jamal Musiala goal.

Germany initially struggled to break through Italy's defence but gained momentum after Alessandro Buongiorno fouled Kleindienst, resulting in a penalty. Kimmich converted the spot-kick, placing it in the bottom-left corner. Shortly after, Kimmich's quick thinking caught Italy off guard as he set up Musiala for an easy tap-in from a corner.

Germany Advances After Draw with Italy

Kimmich continued to shine by assisting Kleindienst just before halftime. His cross found Kleindienst, whose header barely crossed the line despite Gianluigi Donnarumma's efforts. This marked Kimmich's second assist of the match, showcasing his pivotal role in Germany's attack.

Italy showed improvement after Luciano Spalletti introduced Matteo Politano and Davide Frattesi at halftime. Moise Kean scored twice, first with a powerful shot into the bottom-left corner and then with a curling finish in the 69th minute, narrowing Germany's aggregate lead to 5-3.

Italy had a penalty appeal overturned by VAR when Nico Schlotterbeck tackled Giovanni Di Lorenzo. However, they were awarded another penalty in stoppage time due to Maximilian Mittelstadt's handball from a corner. Giacomo Raspadori converted confidently, but Italy couldn't find another chance to level the tie.

Kimmich's performance was instrumental for Germany. Playing out of position at right-back, he contributed significantly with a goal and two assists. This marked only the second time he achieved such stats for Germany, previously doing so against San Marino in June 2017.

Historical Context and Future Prospects

For Italy, conceding three first-half goals was reminiscent of their 2009 Confederations Cup match against Brazil. Despite their historic comeback from three goals down to draw, it is Germany who advances to the semi-finals scheduled for June.

Kimmich has been involved in all five of Germany’s recent goals (one goal and four assists), highlighting his influence on this tie’s outcome almost single-handedly.
