Germany's Julian Nagelsmann Prioritises Development Ahead Of 2026 World Cup

Julian Nagelsmann is set to use Germany's Nations League match against Hungary as a launchpad for their preparation for the 2026 World Cup. With limited time before qualification, he stresses the importance of development and performance over results.

Germany's national football team is gearing up for their final Nations League match against Hungary, marking the beginning of their preparation for the 2026 World Cup. Despite already securing a spot in the quarter-finals, Germany's recent 7-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina solidified their top position in Group A3. This win was not only significant but also set a record as the largest margin in the competition.

The German team has been impressive throughout this Nations League season, boasting an average of 3.4 goals per game, the highest in any season of the competition. Although World Cup qualification hasn't started yet, coach Julian Nagelsmann is eager to keep up this momentum to secure a place in the tournament. "We won the group. We get the motivation from wanting to develop," he stated during a press conference.

Nagelsmann Focuses on Germany's World Cup Preparation

Germany aims to clinch their first major trophy since winning the World Cup in 2014. Their recent performances have been promising, with four wins and one draw in their first five matches of this Nations League campaign. They have scored 17 goals, more than any other team, while conceding only three goals, second only to Spain.

Nagelsmann emphasised that while victories are crucial, they are not everything. "Wins are always important for us," he said. "Nothing will collapse if we don't win [on Tuesday]. The result is not as important as the way we will play." He highlighted that there is limited time for development before World Cup qualification begins and even less if they qualify for the tournament.

The German squad has faced challenges in recent tournaments, exiting early from both previous Nations League editions and being eliminated at Euro 2024's quarter-finals on home turf. However, their current form suggests they are on track to break this streak and achieve success once again.

Nagelsmann stressed that efficient use of time is essential for development due to limited opportunities before World Cup qualifiers commence. His focus remains on refining gameplay rather than solely chasing results. As Germany prepares for Budapest, they aim to continue building on their strong performances and maintain their upward trajectory.
